New TiVo DVR For TV Recording That Includes The Internet
TiVo the leader in home digital video recording is launching new DVR this spring ready for the invasion of internet connected television sets. As well as being a slimmer and slicker looking model, the new TiVo also features a new style menu system to cater for both TV shows and Internet content.
TiVo have been struggling to keep up with changing tv habits and increased competition, the new dvr internet interaction is instantly noticable, if a viewer chooses a movie to watch, they will get the option to watch it from a cable provider or download the stream from an online provider such as Netflix, Amazon CinemaNow or Blockbuster. Users can also send their music collections straight to the dvr.
The new TiVo will also find TV shows, podcasts and even audio from a variety of sources. Based on a show selection, links to related videos on YouTube will also be shown. It is expected that the box will also link up to websites such as Amazon letting users buy merchandise related to shows or movies being watched.
The new interface also provides quick access to content based on categories like actors, directors or seasons. Users can also browse through collections, like an Oscar collection, to quickly view relevant movies. A new feature provided with the box is the ability to display remaining storage on the device in real time, Joyce said.
“This is a whole new chapter in TiVo’s evolution,” CEO Tom Rogers said in an interview. “We’re moving toward `get anything you want whenever you want it.’”
The new TiVo Premiere is TiVo’s first product launch in over two years. The $499 Premiere XL will be able to store up to 150 hours of high-definition TV on its 1-terabyte hard drive. The $299 Premiere can store up to 45 hours of HD TV on its 320-gigabyte hard drive. The DVR uses Adobe Flash software, which is widely used on the internet and will enable TiVo to let third party developers create applications for the new units.
So the prices of the new units are similar to the existing range. There is still a subscription required from $12.95 a month to $299 for three years. Customers can also choose to pay the fees in one lump sum of $399 to last the life of the unit.
Tivo does not have the market to itself however, Boxee launched a set-top box allowing users to stream TV shows and movies from the Internet to their television sets and computers. Then we have Yahoo with their Widgets which complement TV viewing with additional information and streams from the Internet.
One thing is for sure, the TiVo will face much stiffer competition this time around and its success cannot be guaranteed.
