A select group of TiVo subscribers will now have additional access to over 70 additional streaming on-demand video channels in the form of apps. Users will have access to everything from Showtime to TMZ through a new deal TiVo just signed with Flingo, the leading publisher of television apps available on Smart TVs.
TiVo who are struggling with fierce competition from streaming services, will be integrating Flingo’s LaunchPad video service platform into all of its latest set-top-boxes, and the apps available on the platform will include recap shows from Showtime TV to new videos from comedic site Funny or Die and everything in between (like recipe/cooking shows Saveur.)
“People are demanding access to online streaming content from the comfort of their own living room, and TiVo’s offerings has evolved to support that demand,” said Tara Maitra, SVP and GM of content & media sales at TiVo.“Flingo’s platform and wide range of apps makes it possible for TiVo to offer even more choices to our viewers, and we’re excited to work with Flingo.”
The LaunchPad platform will replace TiVo’s own TivoCast and the new Flingo apps will be available to roughly 3 million customers who are using the companies new Premiere box. Unfortunately if you receive TiVo services through your cable or satellite company you will not be able to access to additional content. Regardless, Flingo CEO Ashwin Navin is thrilled with the new partnership.
“TiVo is still one of the most successful standalone set-top box companies,” said Navin. “They’ve turned the corner in terms of being able to coexist with cable companies and we were brought in to revamp their web video platform. Anyone with web video can now publish an app to TiVo very quickly and monetize it.”
