AMC zombie drama The Walking Dead has been a huge success ever since it was first launched in 2010, and Amazon-owned streaming platform LoveFilm will be hoping that trend continues in the online market in the UK, with a recent deal made to include the show on the service.
Although Netflix hold the lucrative rights in the USA, anyone attempting to watch on-demand in the UK will have to do so via Amazon’s platform, a move which could become an extremely strong content coup for the region’s #2 service should .
LoveFilm Instant are now noted as holding the rights to season one of The Walking Dead for the next 18 months as of yesterday, and also claim that they are the only ‘subscription streaming service’ in the region that will be offering those inaugural 6 episodes of the thriller.
LoveFilm’s director of film strategy Chris Bird summarised: “Securing the exclusive streaming rights to The Walking Dead is another exciting development for us. It is seriously impressive that the show has become one of the most-watched drama series in basic US cable history, and a real testament to its quality. We are thrilled to bring this great content to our members, especially as we are the only subscription service in the country to do so.”
While viewers on more regular means of content consumption (i.e. TV) will be able to enjoy season four of The Walking Dead in the UK on Fox at the tail-end of the year, the chance to look back will currently extend as far as season one for new and existing LoveFilm subscribers, so although it may not stretch as far as more committed fans of the series would like, LoveFilm instant at least appear to have one of the safest possible shows to feature on their homepage, despite its misleading title…
