The Sims 4 Confirmed For 2014

Arguably the most popular game series of all-time The Sims is set to launch another new incarnation in 2014, with creators Maxis and developers EA Games this week confirming The Sims 4 as arriving next year for PC and Mac users.

the_sims_4Formally announced on Monday (6 May), the news swiftly confirmed¬†fresh rumours of its arrival, after it was discovered not too long before that EA had registered the web domain ‘thesims4.com‘.

Maxis said of the simulation sequel: “Today we are revealing to our top fans the fact that The Sims 4 is coming to PC and Mac in 2014. The Sims franchise is fuelled by the passion and creativity of its millions of fans around the world. Their continued devotion to the franchise ignites the fire of creativity of the team at The Sims Studio, driving them to continually improve and innovate on one of the world’s most successful simulation game that has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.”

While they claim more will be revealed on the game in the near future, given recent events surrounding Microsoft, arguably the most important news on the title was announced, in that the game will not need the purported new Xbox-style¬†‘always-online’ mode, and will be compatible with “single-player and offline” play, unlike the recent SimCity game which controversially took on an always-connected format.

The official press release does encourage online ‘sharing’ where possible, though, as it notes: “The Sims 4 celebrates the heart and soul of the Sims themselves, giving players a deeper connection with the most expressive, surprising and charming Sims ever in this single-player offline experience. The Sims 4 encourages players to personalise their world with new and intuitive tools while offering them the ability to effortlessly share their creativity with friends and fans.”

The series is notable for it’s creativity and open-ended simulation of life, with those handy enough with the game able to use the in-built ‘filming’ features to produce innovative content online, though it obviously all starts from the base game and its many expansion packs, the newest of which for The Sims 3 can be seen below:
