Sports fans around the world now have more and greater opportunities to watch sporting content than at any other point in broadcasting history. Many websites both official and not so official, have sprung up offering a chance to watch live sporting events from the comfort of your PC, laptop or mobile device. Be warned that some sites will offer streaming that comes from servers located in China or other exotic places, and may be questionable in terms of ‘legality’ and many require you to install P2P software before you can watch. Here we present a glance of the most notable streaming options for live sport online:-
The most popular fully-official service provided by the networks themselves appears to be ESPN in the USA, providing a primary focus on the ‘big 4′ American sports leagues, but also with a widespread range of sources for its official programming. Live streaming of all ESPN channels is on offer for those with a valid subscription, while selected free ‘news clips’ are available for users around the world free of charge (but ad-supported).
Average rating from users – 2.5/5
Comments from WorldTV on PC users – ‘ROHIT’ (4.5) wrote: “This is the only channel where with sports entertainment is being received, the commentators well skilled.”
In a similar manner to ESPN’s impact in the USA both on pay-tv and online, Sky Sports is by far the UK’s best-known and longest-running dedicated brand of sports network, providing users with a similar service to their American comparative.
Average rating from users – 2.5/5
Comments from WorldTV on PC users – ‘Justin’ (4.5) wrote: “Very useful and entertaining. I am happy I found a very good website for free live analysis updates.”
If there is one channel in the UK that is more like ESPN than Sky Sports, though, it is ESPN’s venture into the UK itself as ESPN UK. A pay-tv channel that is now under the ownership of new network BT Sport, ESPN’s video selection appears to offer lengthier content (such as full ad-supported content of discussion show ESPN Press Pass) alongside smaller news clips, although WorldTV on PC users do not appear to be as easily impressed.
Average rating from WorldTV on PC users – 1.5/5
While not technically a sport, the popularity of the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) cannot be denied, and it is the most popular site dedicated purely to one official ‘league’. The video hub, while not providing any live or full-length modern content and imposes restrictions on select content depending on territory, does provide the latest highlights from both the Raw and Smackdown series, along with the chance to watch full-length ‘classic matches’.
Average rating from WorldTV on PC users – 4.5/5
Another service that focuses on the sports and events that often slide under the global radar is Laola 1, an Austrian site which offers streaming primarily focused on volleyball, table tennis, and ice hockey due to their official partnerships with the sport’s respective international unions, alongside other licenced events such as in handball. Also featured are events and fixtures from football, tennis, motorsport, curling, and ‘mind games’, amongst others.
