DVD Shrink (Windows 9x/2000/XP)
Although DVD Shrink was discontinued as a product a while back its still a fantastic DVD decrypter, ripper, and backup product. It has some great features including a compression feature which is able to convert an 8GB dual layer DVD to an amazingly small 4GB size which will easily fit onto a single layer DVD.
HandBrake (Windows, MacOS and Linux)
This Freeware multi platform software ripper makes converting your DVD’s childs play. You can convert to a large range of formats including your PSP, Ipod, PS3 console, Apple TV and much more. Features also include Chapter selection, Basic subtitle support (burned into the picture), Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling and much more.
DVDFab is a simple ripper that will copy your DVD movies to your hard drive whilst removing all copy protections such as CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS. For all you techno guys it also features full HD DVD and BluRay support (Removing AACS).Although it is shareware the trial version will let you do as much as is needed to rip DVD’s.
MacTheRipper (Mac OS X)
MacTheRipper is for all you Mac users. Its a free DVD ripper and will copy and extract movies to your hard drive removing all copy protections and region controls present on the original DVD. Once transferred, you can use the vast array of tools to copy back onto DVD or convert to different formats for playback on a variety of devices.
DVD Decrypter (Windows)
Similar in many ways to DVD Shrink and DVDFab. It will happily and easily rip your DVD’s straight to your hard disk.It has not been in active developed for some time but ios still a great ripper.
Although obviously, legally you cannot copy DVD’s that you dont own. You should however be able to watch a movie you have paid for on your ipod or mobile etc and these tools will help you to achieve this. Happy viewing
