IMDB Release New Movie TV App For iPhone and iPad

IMDB the Internet Movie Database, previously released an iPad App earlier in the year. The app allows the user to view information on over 1.5 million movies. It allows you to check information about actors, actresses, directors and celebrities. Plus when your bored of reading, the app lets you to watch movie trailers.

But now IMDB have released a revamped app for both Apple’s iPhone and iPad that includes some new ‘help the movie geek’ style features.

IMDB Pro users can log-in with their pro-accounts on iPhone and iPad, plus social networking features have been introduced in the app which includes log-in with your Facebook id or share it on Twitter and Facebook.

This 2.0 release of IMDB adds some iOS 4 friendly features theres support for the Retina display in the iPhone 4 and newer iPod touches as well as multitasking capabilities. That latter feature allows you to jump between IMDB and other apps without losing your place.

Other enhancements in IMDB 2.0 don’t depend on iOS 4 support. The app now lets you sign in with either your IMDB or Facebook account to rate movies and TV shows. IMDB for the iPhone and iPad now offers entertainment news from assorted sources; a redesigned home screen brings the latest news straight to your iOS device. What’s more, the Showtimes feature has gone international with listings for movie theaters in 13 countries, including Canada and the UK. IMDB promises bug fixes and performance optimization in the 2.0 version as well.

IMDb Movie App Now Available For All Apple Devices

IMDb the main source for movies and tv shows is difficult to find your way round on a mobile web browser. There’s a ton of information to navigate your way around, and I usually end up clicking on a link I don’t want to goto as I stumble my way round the website in the mobile’s browser.

IMDb have realized that their mobile users experience is not good enough. Late last year, the IMDb developers rolled out an app designed for the iPhone only. When the iPad hit the scene this spring, IMDb updated its app so that it’s now optimized for all of Apple’s devices. Regardless of whether you’re looking up a movie or TV data on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. If you’re the sort of person who wants easy access to information about movies and TV shows, this is a must have addition to any mobile device.

All the information you would look up on the IMDb Website cast lists, actor credits, reviews from critics and other IMDb users, and more is available via the mobile app. IMDb simply lists the top billed actors you can tap on their names to see what other movies they’ve appeared in or you can tap a link to get a full cast list on another screen. It’s a very sensible approach to managing the presentation of a lot of data.

The app is a lot better on the iPad, which gives the app a larger screen to work with and also allows for use of multiple panes and pop up windows. Now, when you tap on the link to see the entire cast list of a movie, it appears as a separate, scrollable window overlaid on top of the main screen. The same thing goes on pages for individual actors when you opt to see their entire filmography–it, too, shows up as a separate window, giving you the information you want without forcing you to tap your way back where you started.

Nice touches like that exist throughout the IMDb app. IMDb lets you view trailers, but the video player is built right into the app; when you’re done watching, you go right back to where you left off. An omnipresent IMDb button lets you jump right back to the app’s Home page if you want quick access to the main menu of search categories. A lot of lesser apps would make you hunt and peck your way back to the start.

IMDb plan to add streaming movies to website

Popular movie trivia website IMDb is looking to add streaming content for the one million plus titles it has indexed on its website.

IMDB founder Col Needham has acknowledged that it wont be easy getting around the swath of content owners controlling its massive range of titles on the Internet Movie Database, but says that as a leading movie oriented website, it is a very important goal that it wants to achieve.

Needham was talking at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Talking about IMDb’s history from being founded prior to the advent of the internet, then its launch as a website and being bought by Amazon.com. He then explained how he wants to make it possible for the 57 million monthly unique visitors to the site to watch, with the click of one button, all the movies, TV shows, and other video content indexed on the site.

It will be difficult to fulfill the vision, Needham said, “because many of the films may not exist anymore and many may not be available for streaming.”

But these days, free or paid streaming of movies is available from a number of sources, including: Netflix, Hulu, TV.com (a part of CBS Interactive, which publishes CNET News), Amazon, iTunes, and others. Each of those sources, though, has its own arrangement with the content owners, so for IMDb to get access to the entire library would be a massive and difficult task.

IMDb has already started adding streaming video to its website, a task that started in September. There are so far around 14000 full length TV episodes and 2000 plus full length movies available on its website, as well as 120,000 other pieces of video content, such as interviews and movie trailers.

And he said that the site is adding thousands of new pieces of video content per week.

At that rate, however, it’s sure to take the site quite some time to achieve the goal. Needham said he imagined a time three years from now when we will all look back at early 2009, when so many media sites are trying to solve the problem of making content available to those who want it in the face of resistance from the Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America, and we’ll shake our heads at where we were at.

“We’ll laugh at how little we knew about what business models would work,” Needham said.
