Live TV Comes To Xbox Live With Verizon FiOS app

Xbox 360 users who subscribe to Verizon FiOs cable and web services can soon watch Xbox live TV using the Microsoft games console. The service will offer 26 live television channels and launches in December.

box users will need to be Live Gold members and need to download the Verizon FiOS TV Xbox app to get the streaming entertainment. Back in October Microsoft announced partnerships for “the next generation of TV entertainment on Xbox LIVE.”

They are teaming up with almost 40 TV and entertainment providers in 20 countries around the world including Bravo, Comcast, HBO GO, Verizon FiOS and Syfy for the US, The BBC for the UK, Spanish network Telefónica, Televisa in Mexico, ZDF in Germany, MediaSet in Italy and Rogers On Demand in Canada.

The launch comes just as the Xbox 360 dashboard gets a redesign on December 6, including new features such as cloud storage, integrated voice and gesture controls and social network options.

If you’re an existing Verizon subscriber then you will need to ring Verizon who will add the streaming service, but you will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription plus a FiOS TV and Internet subscription to get the free streaming.

For new users, Verizon are offering a special deal until next January for Xbox 360 owners. For $89.99 monthly users can get a triple play package consisting of TV, phone and internet access plus a free 12 month subscription to Xbox Live Gold, and the game, Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

The range of channels available at launch in December will include 26 streaming channels including seventeen in HD that can be controlled using the kinect motion and voice system. It’s a good move by Verizon and Microsoft as game consoles are the number one device to watch streaming TV.

Games Consoles Become Most-Viewed Online TV Method For TV’s

Games consoles have this week been listed as the most popular platform on which people watch online TV through their TV sets, suggesting that the ability to connect mobile devices (such as tablet computers and smartphones) and desktop browsers streaming content are not quite as mainstream as most would have thought, with the same applying for the purpose-made and Internet-connected ‘smart TV’s’.

The survey of online TV users in the USA was conducted by the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices, in a report entitled Multiscreen Connected TV: Assessing Device Usage and Ownership.

It discovered that while computers (and monitors) are still the most prominent approach to watching content online, many viewers prefer to connect their online devices to a larger TV screen, with games consoles (and their online TV services) seen as the easiest way to achieve this, with IP-based content generally delivered to the bigger screen via HDMI cables.

A key statistic released was that a total 12% of households in the USA use game consoles (mainly the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360) as a means of watching online content as a whole (as compared to just TV screens), a rate higher than that of any other device-to-TV method.

Meanwhile, age could be seen as starting an upward trend of alternative online TV, with around 65% of Xbox 360 aged under 25 claiming to use their console as their main means of accessing TV series and films online, with computer-based viewing lower down the list.

Jia Wu, a senior analyst on the survey, said of the results of his team’s research: “These findings indicate significant levels of consumer demand for such services. The upcoming Xbox TV launch for the holiday season will demonstrate an expansion of the partnership between the games consoles and the online TV and video industries. Games consoles have already become the key media hub in US households.”

Hulu Plus Streaming Coming To Nintendo 3DS And Wii

Nintendo game consoles will soon be able to stream Hulu Plus, Nintendo have announced. They say that by the years end, owners of 3DS and Wii consoles can use the TV-On-Demand subscription service to watch TV shows and movies.

Along with Hulu Plus, Nintendo also announced that the 3DS handheld console will also be able to record up to ten minutes of 3D video recording on the 3DS by the end of November.

The Nintendo consoles already have a streaming service available in the form of Netflix since July, but the Hulu Plus service increases the number of movies and TV shows available.

The Hulu free service will not be available on the Nintendo consoles though as only the Plus service costing $7.99 monthly can be used on non-pc devices.

Nintendo will also be adding new content to the Nintendo Video service, which will include a Dreamworks short with the Shrek characters singing Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Game Consoles A New Frontier For Youtube

Youtube it seems are looking at gaming consoles in a more serious light, after advertising for a game console software engineer. The video sharing site owned by Google may be looking at future revenue streams from both advertising and pay to view.

Console owners already have access to Youtube videos via the Youtube XL website that can be seen from game console browsers on Wii and PS3, whilst Xbox 360 users currently do not have a Youtube viewing option.

Other streaming services have become very popular on consoles including flavor of the month Netflix, who have a very successful streaming on demand service running on most consoles.

In the job advert it says that the candidate will need to “build the next generation game-console-based TV experience with You Tube video content” and be able to “integrate and optimize with distribution channels and devices including all major game platforms.”

YouTube have been busy turning from a video sharing site to a premium content delivery system that includes tv shows, catch-up-tv and movie streaming that is both free and pay to view. As consoles become more of a social hub than just a toy, Youtube want some of that next gen cash.

Watch IPTV On Xbox 360 With AT&T U-verse

As we reported back in September, AT&T have now struck a deal with Microsoft allowing its U-verse subscribers to watch cable on their Xbox 360 consoles. The games consoles will act as a receiver for U-verse streaming TV content.

AT&T, the US phone and internet provider revealed that they are the first video provider to offer viewers the live TV experience using their Xbox 360 system. The set-up will also allow U-verse customers to have chats and receive game invitations via Xbox Live whilst watching a show. Gamers can also switch between game and TV mode without having to fiddle with wires or switches.

It was also announced that subscribers will via interactive apps, be able tp use their console to organise and play back DVR shows, view program guides and have access to tv-on-demand.

The setup will mean forking out $99 for an Xbox kit and of course a subscription to the service. The service be the first live TV offering for Xbox 360 in the US when launched on 15th October. And Windows Phone 7 users will get the service in November.

New Internet Only Reality TV Show On PlayStation 3 Debuts

Holding true on its promise to give PS3 users original TV offerings, Sony Computer Entertainment America are bringing a new reality tv show to a PS3 and playstation portable devices. The show called = The Tester, will be made available starting February 18th via the PlayStation Network distribution service.

The show which is an internet tv only offering and not available on traditional tv joins “The Guild”, another games console only tv show which was aired exclusively on rival Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE distribution network.

Predictably and just like The Guild, The Tester is all about… Gaming! And has 11 game testers who compete against each other to become a PlayStation game tester and get a $5,000 winning cheque. As per reality show formats, the desperate (hopefuls) will live together in a communal house and be filmed for eight episodes filled with zany challenges quasi-related to actual skills allegedly required for game testing.

Transmission begings on February 18th and a new episode every week will then be available for free download on the PlayStation Network.

Watch Movies and Shows on PS3 Usine Netflix

Netflix have announced that internet streaming will soon be available on your PlayStation 3.

A Netflix press release announced it will partner with Sony to show movies and TV shows from Netflix’s large library online using Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. The announcement comes on the eve of the end of the company’s deal with Microsoft and its Xbox 360 console and allows PS3 owners to stream movies from the Netflix catalog. The good news is that the streaming feature will be free of charge so long as users have a monthly Netflix DVD mail subscription, starting from just $9 a month.

However there is always a ying to every yang and the bad newsis. PS3 owners will have to insert a special Blu-ray disc into the PS3, which will enable streaming via the Blu-ray’s BD Live functionality. That’s a departure from all other Netflix-enabled devices (including the Xbox 360 and other Blu-ray players), which just have the Netflix option as a built-in feature.

Opinions are that BD Live is pretty sluggish, although it is better on the PS3 than on other Blu-ray players. However, the press release specifies that the disc will be needed “initially,” so perhaps a future software upgrade will add Netflix as a built-in feature on the PS3.

However, the Netflix feature of the 360 has long been envied by PS3 owners, so its inclusion, even with the need to be launched from a disc will be welcome news. The Netflix website says that the feature will be available before the end of the year, and Netflix subscribers who own a PS3 can reserve a copy of the Netflix disc as of now.

In the console owner ultra competative world, PS3 users being able to do something that xbox360 owners have been crowing about will make PS3 Online tv viewers happy chappies.

Game Consoles Most Popular Web to TV Device

Internet TV is all well and good but when you want to see it on the big TV screen, game consoles are the number one method for watching web streams on your television set.

According to research by In-Stat, consoles will be the preferred medium of Web to TV devices. And by the year 2013, over 10.7 million will be in use for this purpose.

It makes sense of course, everyone owns an Xbox or Playstation and most people hook it up to the big TV screen. Microsoft have 30 million Xbox 360′s in the market and Sony 23 million units. Add Nintendo to the mix and you have a lot of popular devices ready for online TV.

Other Internet TV devices such as Tivo are actually losing subscribers, Roku and Vudu arent exactly setting the world on fire either. The survey also suggests that by 2013 the number of US households watching Online TV will rise to 24 million from the current 2.5 million currently.

The Console manufacturers realise the potential and are all jumping aboard online TV and turning the humble console into an entertainment hub. All the big guns are lining up content partners and Microsoft have already added a Netflix capability to its consoles. Youtube is rife in console land and it will grow and grow.

Currently hooking your PC up to your television screen is not the easiest thing in the world to do, but imagine being able to browse and watch straight from a device you already own and use for gaming.

It makes perfect sense, but just means i’ll need to upgrade from my Playstation one now.

Game Console Manufacturer Sony may have a larger network of online users compared to Xbox. But in the Game Console TV arena it’s way behind. Is that about to change?

Although Sony boast that its PlayStation Network comprises over 20 million registered users (compared with Xbox Live at 17 million). Due to the Netflix deal Xbox Live is streets ahead with internet TV boasting over 30,000 TV episodes and movies for users to watch.

However Sony are hitting back. It announced today a major deal with NBC Universal, allowing PS Network users to watch the latest TV shows and movies online. But for a cost.

To rent a viewing, users will need to cough up between $2.99 – $5.99, whilst purchasing will cost around $9.99 – $14.99. TV shows will be made available to view the day after they air on TV.

This new deal follows news that Sony added shows from across MTV Networks channels, including MTV, Spike and Nickelodeon. Sony says the PlayStation Network now offers over 1,300 movies and more than 4,500 TV episodes, with episodes available in both standard definition and High Definition(HD). An advantage that Playstation has over Xbox is that the movies are portable if your using the PSP.
