Full TV shows viewed online has doubled since 2006

Watching Full episodes via the internet has always been popular, but now it has skyrocketed. Double the number of Internet users now view full TV shows online than they did in 2006.

The report compiled by Research company Knowledge Networks, showed that a fifth of Internet users surveyed aged 13-54 view full TV shows on the net. And 2 in every 3 say the now ‘expect’ their favorite TV shows to be available online for watching on any device including mobile phones, settop boxes and other mobile devices. Surveyed were over 1900 people aged between 13-54.

Titled ‘How People Use TV’s Web Connections’, the report also revealed the sharp rise in popularity of online tv and catch-up tv websites. Visitors of the premiere TV website Hulu have more than doubled between 2007-2009. Now over 28% of the internet using demographic are watching Hulu. Still more popular however are Youtube and the networks’ websites. The networks are the first place people look for catch up tv episodes.

Soi what are people searching for when looking for TV shows on the net? 87% want to see a recent TV episode they may have missed, 40%want to watch older episodes, or to catch up on older shows, 18% of users are looking for brand new episodes to watch.

More interesting statistics from the report showed that 30% of viewers have sent the TV show link to a friend and 86% get more engaged with shows they view on the internet

David Tice of Knowledge Networks commented:- “Amongst streamers, there is no shortage of demand for TV network content, and Internet availability of full episodes increases their appetite for both online and traditional viewing of programs. This kind of access and control has become something streamers demand, and networks and sponsors both reap benefits from the added engagement that full TV streaming creates.”

Lost the most watched TV show online

Watching TV shows online is booming as we know and now the internet TV show ratings confirm it. It has been announced by Nielsen that the Show viewed the most online is Lost which had a mamoth 1.4 million unique views during December last year.

The Stats which cover December 2008, shows the results from the major networks who have an online internet TV website.

The show was at number one and is followed by Saturday Night Live, having 1.1 million views from unique users. Grey’s Anatomy came in at number three having 879,000 views. Desperate Housewives and Heroes brought up the rear.

So with the increase in broadcasters showing premium content online, why do you still use Cable or Satellite TV?.

The previous limitations to online TV such as low quality streams and slow buffering are now gone. Websites like NBC and ABC let you view all premium prime time TV shows free and even some are broadcast online in HD. Plus it is now easy to connect your PC up to the television in a variety of ways.

If you have’nt already moved to viewing online, then you should at least start making use of it as pretty soon it will be the dominant broadcast platform.

For those of you of a certain age will remember the classic Star Trek with Scotty, Bones and Captain Kirk. They may all be walking around with zimmer frames now, but in their prime the starred in the most influential and groundbreaking SciFi series of all time.

And now thanks to Youtube and CBS, you are able to watch all the Star Trek episodes in full and in high definition. CBS have put onto their Youtube channel 70 full length Star Trek episodes.

Youtube have been agressively moving away from karaoke videos and people falling over, and more into mainstream internet TV. And now have a sizeable collectiopn of Movies and TV shows available.

The CBS channel on Youtube doesnt just cater for Trekkie fans though, you can also watch other full length TV shows such as MacGyver, Jericho and Beverly Hills 90210.

The only problem is that for non US residents, the streams are unavailable to watch.

Watch Hit TV show 24 online with no commercials

The sensational TV show ’24′ May be having a hard time in the ratings war on traditional TV. But it’s having a great time on Hulu.

The latest Nielsen ratings for Fox’s hit show are down over 20% when compared to it’s run in 2007, however online viewing on the Hulu website is looking good.

Hulu, the Fox/NBC joint tv website has not disclosed exact stats for 24′s episodes shown from season seven on Sunday night. But the episodes made up four out of Hulu’s top 15 popular videos.

The big question is will the online catch up tv episodes affect the advertising revenues for Fox, and why are viewers watching online?

Well, part of the reason may be the reduction in advertising. When watching 24 via traditional TV you have to sit through 20 minutes of TV ads. On the Hulu website viewers can just watch a trailer for 20th Century Fox’s action thriller Taken and watch 24 with no advertising at all.If you dont want to watch the trailer then you need to endure five 30 second adverts during the 24 episode.

The viewing figures for the two night premiere of 24 was down over 20% when compared to season six’s premiere. Ratings for the back to back episodes three and four were down from last year by an even bigger 22%.

Although Hulu is gaining massively at the expense of the TV version, the loss in advertising will need to be recouped somehow. So dont get too used to the ad free internet tv version. It may not last too long.
