When TV shows began streaming online, many thought we had entered a world of free and on-demand TV. A world where you had access to thousands of hours of premium quality content whenever you wanted it, and could watch it anywhere and on any device.

Are the days of free online TV ending?

The news that Fox are putting their catch-up TV streams behind a paywall, and feeding freeloaders content eight days later, just goes to show that the networks are not happy with a free ad-supported model on the web.

It seems that the content providers strategy has changed, making the internet an extension of expensive cable and satellite subscriptions and pay services. After Fox, other studios and TV networks are queuing up to start charging. In the UK, ITV are planning to charge for streaming, ABC and other broadcasters may soon follow and put their content behind a paywall.

The trend seems to be for monetizing all TV content while giving less and less for free. It does seem that if this trend continues and the free content gets more diminished, more viewers will go down the road of torrent and piracy sites to get their content

Many viewers will resent extra costs to watch content that is free to watch on TV, and will feel that the ad supported model still pays the networks well.

Wave goodbye to free Internet TV – CNET

Foxs decision to make anybody but cable satellite or Hulu Plus subscribers wait an extra week to access hit shows–such as Bones–is just the latest reduction of free Web TV. They said Hulu was going to save the film studios and …

Forget mindless sex and violence, how about getting educated and informed whilst your vegitating on the couch. Hulu agrees and plans to introduce a dedicated area to its popular streaming TV website. The new area will be solely featuring documentaries.

Hulu spokesman, Andy Forssell said:- “It is really an exciting part of the industry, these filmmakers and their distributors are really looking at streaming carefully. One of the opportunities in the movies area was to focus more on documentaries because the online availability provided them with a great chance to find and reach an audience.”

Forssell said that it was currently working with its content providers sourcing content for the new area whos purpose will be to put all of the documentary movies and shows into a single area on the website so finding documentaries will be simpler.

When its launched the documentary section will feature TV shows from PBS, as well as the recently cancelled FX show 30 Days. Documentary movies include Super Size Me, which was the inspiration for the FX series, Kicking It and Confessions of a Super Hero.

Of course you can find many Documentaries online in our free tv websites area.

Our online video website guide has had an update. Hundreds more Free TV websites have been shoehorned into our already bulging video site list which currently stands at around 2000 websites.

In the continuing ‘Internet TV wars’, TV.com’s owner CBS have intimated that they are not happy with Hulu withdrawing TV streams from their website and plan to continue streaming them.

In a statement CBS revealed they will fight the removal of Hulu’s streams on TV.com. They said:- “CBS Interactive is well within its rights to stream Hulu video content on TV.com under its agreement with Hulu. We are evaluating our next steps at this time.”

Last week in an unexpected move, Hulu streams were pulled from TV.com and also Boxee’s media center for what was described as ‘contractual obligations’, just nobody knows what that means at this time.

Hulu, the largest and most successful catch up tv network online is owned by NBC and Fox and is becomining the most dominant and influential online TV website.

The success is probably down to the fact that Hulu operates independently from its parent companies, however it looks like someone behind the scenes is starting to throw their weight around and stop streaming from anywhere else than Hulu’s main website.

Interestingly, CBS were invited to be part of the Hulu setup from inception but declined the offer.

Stay tuned for the next ‘internet tv wars’ update

Cable TV giant Comcast is planning to launch its own internet TV service.

Known as ‘OnDemand Online’, the service will be launched later in the year and will be showing premium content from the cable networks.

It will be a different service from Hulu though. Hulu shows content from the main networks such as Fox and NBC, and shows it after the initially broadcast on the free to air networks.

The service is expected to be a free service for existing Comcast subscribers and the ‘OnDemand Online’ will be pushed as a premium content service, a level above Hulu. However it is quite probable that Hulu will show the same content at a later date. But noone wants to wait, do they?

It is also a possibility that the online TV content will be available as a seperate service, thereby giving Comcast an online tv option for when cable starts losing more subscribers.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of the news that Hulu has removed its content from TV.com and Boxee leading to all sorts of conspiracy theories. Has Comcast got anything to do with the content removal? Having its own online TV service to protect, it may not want its hit shows streaming anywhere else but its own website.

Whatever the reasons, an internet TV presence is a smart move as the market is expanding at a great rate whilst traditional cable is dwindling at the same time.

Comcast has dismissed this suggestion saying that it has not lost any significant subscribers to cable due to the free TV and movie content available on the internet.

But that isn’t guaranteed forever. So Comcast and its peers are smart to do what they can to keep subscribers happy — and to keep as much cable content as possible out of Hulu’s hands.

Youtube is still blowing away the competition in the top video websites chart, but Hulu is gradually bringing up the rear.

USA consumers watched a massive 13.5 billion online videos in October and nearly half, 40% watched them on YouTube. This represents a jump of 45% in online video viewing compared to last year. The data was compiled by the comScore Video Metrix service.

Google’s websites ranked as the number one with nearly 5.4 billion videos viewed. YouTube accounted for over 98% of all videos viewed. Fox Interactive Media came in second with 520 million videos (3.8%), followed by Yahoo Sites with 363 million (2.7%), and Viacom Digital with 305 million (2.3%).

Hulu managed to come in at number six. The joint venture from NBC and Fox which shows catch up tv shows had 235 million videos viewed (1.7%). This number has nearly doubled since July when Hulu was in eighth position. Hulu also had the highest average duration of time per video view.

Top Online Video Properties by No. of Unique Viewers

More than 147 million US internet users watched an average of 92 videos per viewer in October. Google Sites attracted a record 100 million online video viewers – or more than two out of every three internet users who watched video during the month. Fox Interactive ranked second with 60.8 million viewers, followed by Yahoo Sites (45.2 million) and Microsoft Sites (30.7 million).

Other points of interest from the report:-

77% of the total US internet audience viewed online video.
The average online video viewer watched 274 minutes of video.
More than 80% of those age 18-34 watched online video, higher than any other age segment. The average 18-34 year old online video viewer watched 4.8 hours of video during the month, also ranking above all other age segments.
99.5 million viewers watched 5.3 billion videos on YouTube.com (53.2 videos per viewer).
51.2 million viewers watched 520 million videos on MySpace.com (8.0 videos per viewer).
The duration of the average online video is 3.0 minutes.
The duration of the average online video viewed at Hulu was 11.6 minutes, higher than any other video property in the top ten.

The findings show that catch up tv services are taking the viewers from the monolithic video sites and if Google and Yahoo dont start getting with the ptrogram they are going to keep sliding.
