Boxee Go Live With New TV Dongle

Boxee have announced the official release of their latest product, the ‘Boxee Live TV’ dongle, a online streaming add-on, with owners of the company’s range of set-top boxes receiving a free software update to bring the general user interface in line with their latest design.

Unveiled in November, the memory stick-shaped device (which connects to the Boxee Box) is priced at $49 each (currently available from the company’s website), and offers users a chance to stream live from major networks such as Fox, ABC, NBC, and CBS, amongst others.

It is thought of by its creators as a product which could help steer users away from traditional TV viewing platforms, with the official announcement blog post from Boxee reading: “Let the cord cutting begin!”

Boxee CEO Avner Ronen had in December given his intial hopes for the Boxee Live TV platform, stating: “Rather than pay $80 per month for cable TV, and pay a lot of money for stuff they don’t watch, Boxee TV is a different setup, where they have much more control over what they pay for. We think it’s very similar to the transition that happened in the music business. Historically, you had a couple of songs that you really like, but you still buy the whole album. As music became digital, users revolted against that type of bundling, and I think the same is happening with video. We don’t think Boxee TV is necessarily for 100 percent of households, but I think for a good numbers of Americans, it could be a real alternative.”

The company who have stopped development of the Boxee software on PC, claim that their target market is users who generally view one-off or specialised TV broadcasts (such as a sports game or an annual awards ceremony), who would often be unable to watch online without paying a subscription to the channel as a whole. Ronen said of this feature, and its aims: “If you’re watching more and more on your laptop or your iPad, then I think you’d like what Boxee is doing. If you’re coming home and you’re watching TV for six hours and you watch a lot of ESPN, we’re probably not the right solution for you.”

Set to be sold only in the USA and Canada, Boxee Live TV will be compatiable only with other Boxee products, and though the device is set up mainly for live streaming broadcasts, Ronen claims that the Boxee Box is capable of performing DVR functions for a user who sets it up in that way. A ‘selective’ online TV platform sounds like a good progressive product, but will the initial promise be reflected in the sales figures?

Boxee See Internet TV Moving Away From The Computer To Mobile And Connected TV

Boxee see the future of internet TV, and the computer which began it all, is not part of that future. In fact, their latest release v.1.5 will be the last that supports the native PC.

It seems that the future will be on mobile devices and via connected TV. The company say that the future of digital TV is changing, and of course it is. But it does seem a bit premature to isolate the PC audience as many see the PC as an essential portal into the TV online world.

Speaking about the move, Boxee said in a blog posting:-

“While there are still many users who have computers connected to their TVs, we believe this use case is likely to decline as users find better alternatives. People will continue to watch a lot of video on their computer, but it is more likely to be a laptop than a home-theater PC and probably through a browser rather than downloaded software.”

Boxee see the future of internet TV coming from connected devices and mobile tablets and smartphones. They say:-

“We believe the future of TV will be driven by devices such as the Boxee Box, Connected TVs / Blu-Rays and 2nd screen devices such as tablets and phones.”

So the 1.5 release will be the last version that is available for PC, the Mac and Ubuntu. It can be downloaded via Boxee.tv until the end of January 2012.

The news has not gone down well with the PC community that supported and promoted the service from it’s early days though. A quick look at the blog posting comments shows some real anger as hundreds of loyal users show their reaction to the news.

Comments include, “And that’s the end of Boxee.” , “Thanks for keeping your promise, but I will not support a company that drops the community which gave it their support first.” , “Not impressed boxee. Another startup that was dedicated to the community has taken to making a quick penny by selling their devices. As a boxee user for years now, I am disappointed with this news.”

The good news for PC owners is that the Boxee software is open source and a modification of the XBMC media player. USers can download and modify the source code for the Boxee software release up to v. 1.5.

So the chances are that the software will continue to be developed, just not by Boxee.

Slingbox Slingplayer App Comes To Boxee

The internet TV box from D-Link that is the Boxee Box, now has an app that will integrate with the SlingBox and let users watch or ‘sling’ any TV from cable to satellite to a PC or mobile device wherever they are.

The new Slingplayer app will let Boxee users control any digital cable box, satellite receiver, or DVR that is connected to their Slingbox Solo or PRO-HD.the venerable box which hooks up to your cable-TV connection and reroutes the video feed across the Internet.

The critical acclaimed Boxee hardware already gives users access to online streaming from Netflix, Vudu and will play almost any file from the home network in HD.

The good news is that you can stream your video and premium content anywhere you are, in what Boxee call “cord shaving,” but you will need both a Boxee box which is’nt cheap at around $199 plus a Slingbox for a similar amount. And not forgetting the cable or satellite subscription too.

Although the app came at a cost for the smartphone and tablets versions, the Boxee Box app is free.

Boxee Remote Comes To PC And Mac

The boxee box from D-Link has a snazzy remote control. And although a version for PC has been around for a while, D-Link have now officially announced the Boxee Remote for PC and Mac watchers is here.

Just connect to your computer using a USB dongle, and get a fully rocking remote that works with the Boxee software.

The Boxee internet TV remote has a novel double sided design with a full QWERTY keypad that works seamlessly with Boxee software. A full QWERTY is on one side and quick launch buttons on the reverse. It also comes with a small USB dongle that provides connectivity to your media center Mac or PC.

Speaking for D-Link, Daniel Kelley said: “The Boxee Remote Control is ideal for home theatre enthusiasts who have customized their home entertainment environment with a specialized PC or Mac media centre, but still want the Boxee Box’s unique viewing experience on their TV.”

Boxee Firmware Update Brings Browser And HTML5 Support

Back in December last year there was an announcement that the Boxee Box set top box has received its first firmware update, despite the fact that the Apple TV like device had not long been out. Now Boxee has announced another new firmware update, that comes with a list of the new features and improvements included.

The new firmware update has brought a raft of changes, included is a massive upgrade to the previously limited browser, which now has full support for history, bookmarks and HTML5.

The web browser Display has also been improved, including the web video playback screens, which now come with more content controls.

Boxee has also updated the local video playback, by moving all the buttons to the bottom of the screen and adding a brand new scrub bar.

Other improvements include a faster browser launch and faster page loading speeds and support for additional languages including Norwegian, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Danish and Russian.

Also the update adds a new MLB application, which enables users to watch both live and recorded games.

This new firmware update contains a number of bug fixes also, including a fix for the problem where the Audio Offset setting would not work, theres also a fix for the problem where a signature failed message would sometimes be displayed when attempting to download and install applications.

Boxees Fund Raise To Prove Their Worth

With regular TV subscription numbers in America on the rise at the end of 2010, it might appear that investing in Internet TV could be a bad move, as to some, it might not represent the future of viewing content. Boxee, though, seem intent on bucking the current trend, after fund-raising for an additional $16.5M from investors, which will be used to try and convince big-name content providers to see its potential.

Boxee is currently trying to market its famed Boxee Box more as an alternative to regular TV than the item to start a cultural overhaul, and this more modest approach seems to be currying favour with the suppliers they are trying to target.

So far, CBS have signed to provide non-exclusive content for the Boxee service (which is running alongside more traditional video-on-demand services Netflix and Vudu), while it is tipped that more of Boxee’s new-found funding will go towards convincing similar networks to provide channels and content on the service as well.

Boxee also recently signed a content deal with video site Blinkx, giving viewers an alternative to watching Youtube on their TV.

Boxee CEO Avner Ronen states on the official Boxee blog: “There are many more sources of content on our to-do list in the US and internationally. We realize that with every new content source we make Boxee more valuable. We will increase the pace.”

On the financial side of recent events, the figure raised by Boxee almost triples the $6M recieved 18 months ago, with returning investors including General Catalyst, Union Square Ventures, and Spark Capital, while new investors are Softbank and Pitango (whose involvement has lead to Pitango supplying a company board member). The investors are obviously confident by parting with this amount cash so freely, but will this big-time investment eventually help Boxee on its quest to establish itself on the Internet TV market?

UK Viewers See SeeSaw On Boxee Box

UK Catch up TV service SeeSaw can now be watched by owners of the Boxee connected tv platform. The service which aggregates UK networks including the the BBC, 4oD and Demand Five on a free basis, and also has an ad free option and rental scheme.

They are now testing offering of streams to D-Links Boxee Box. The service delivers TV-On-Demand to viewers tv sets using a PC running Boxee software or a Boxee set-top box. The Box also lets viewers stream from a number of sources including media files from the home network or hard-drive. Boxee recently reached a deal with Blinx giving the service access to 35 million hours of content.

Owned by the broadcast company Arqiva, SeeSaw will initially let Boxee users access their content from the search function rather than an app. Viewers searching for content will see shows and movies from SeeSaw, and selecting them will open the SeeSaw player.

Initially there will be free content available only, depending on the success SeeSaw may include pay content and ad free versions.

Boxee To Get 35 Million Hours Of Blinkx Video

Owners running the Boxee software or set-top box will soon have access to the huge video selection from Blinkx video search after Blinkx announced a new Boxee app. Blinkx have around 35 million hours of video on their servers.

Boxee Box Finally Gets Netflix Streaming Service

Waiting for Netflix streaming on Boxee has been a little like waiting for the second coming. But now, after a long wait, Boxee have now announced that Netflix movie and tv show streaming will be available to users of the web TV service Boxee Box.

Users had been hoping a firmware upgrade before Christmas would bring the service to their box, but hopes were dashed. It is believed that the launch had been delayed as D-Link who make Boxee, had problems meeting Netflix’s content-security demands.

In order to access the new streaming service in co-operation with the online film rental giant, users will have the option to perform a manual updates to the system firmware, or wait for the 24-hour automatic update to the potentially vast movie line-up from the comfort of their set-top box.

A blog post on the Boxee website by CEO Avner Ronen said: “Netflix support was the most common request we had on our blog comments, forum posts, tweets, etc.. We heard you loud and clear. We were bummed that we could not make it happen earlier, but are very excited to have it out today.”

The Boxee Box launched in November, and ever since, the online TV streaming service (used as an add-on to a regular TV), the company has been pestered by customers to make Netflix available. This move in response to the demand had been in the pipeline since day 1, but has been delayed twice, first with plans to launch the Netflix service by the end of the year 2010, and then the end of January. Boxee explained these delays on their blog earlier in February, claiming that it was due to “not yet satisfying Netflix’s security requirements.”

Boxee, and their customers, now seem to have what they want, but they do have some catching up with their Internet TV rivals to do, as Netflix have been running services on similar hardware for some time now, including Apple TV, set-top boxes from Roku, and the Logitech Revue, amongst others. With the newest addition to their line-up, will Boxee make their name in the world of online TV?

My pet hate in life is losing the tv remote, always when im just comfortable and unwilling to move. Owners of the online tv device Boxee can now forego that worry so long as they own a Blackberry phone. A new app has been released allowing Boxee owners to use their phone as a remote control unit.

There are a number of web connected devices available and the Boxee is one of the more popular ones, allowing viewers to watch streaming tv and movies from popular services such as Netflix and lets viewers stream media into the single hub. Part of the popularity is due to being cheap and available worldwide.

Now BlackBerry owners can use their phone to control the Boxee Box. All users need to do is download the app from developers Antair, then viewers are able to control various functions such as select, play, volume etc. on the Boxee using the WiFi signal.

Iomega have teamed up with Boxee to introduce a new digital home entertainment option that will debut at CES in Las Vegas.

The new device will be powered by an Intel CE4100 processor that will allow full HD 1080p playback, the Iomega TV with Boxee setup sports the obvious a Boxee media player for accessing Internet based content, but it also has an optional hard drive that will allow for the owner’s personal multimedia collection.

With a possibility of upto 2TB of hard drive space at one’s disposal, that could hold up to 500,000 songs, 800,000 photos, or 770 hours of video.

Using the devices built in 802.11n Wi-Fi, the Iomega TV also doubles as a DLNA server that will stream to any room in the house and also host a personal cloud to share files among Internet connected devices with approved access to the cloud.

Nothing is complete without some kind of social networking connection these days. So Iomega TV also connects to Facebook, Twitter, and Google Buzz for TV recommendations from friends.

All of this is operated by a remote control that sports a full QWERTY keyboard on one side and a touch mouse with play, pause, fast forward and rewind buttons controls on the reverse side.

Set to start shipping in February, pricing starts at $229.99 for the basic Iomega TV with Boxee system. For 1TB or 2TB of storage, the price is bumped up to $299.99 and $349.99 respectively.

Boxee Firmware Upgrade Fails To Deliver Netflix Or Hulu Plus

Boxee update but nothing too exciting

Christmas has come early for Boxee Box media device customers. Well, kind of. The box has received an upgrade to it’s firmware, but users eager to get premium tv content from Netflix and Hulu Plus will be cursing Santa.

The new firmware contains a lot of bug fixes and a few tweaks rather than a big upgrade. As explained on the Boxee blog. Things like A-Z scrollbar addition for file searching, hourly scans of any connected source such as USB stick, browsing enhancments and for users that happen to be wearing 3D specs, improved visibility.

The Boxee internet connected device retails for $200 and can be used to play media files from the home network in glorious HD and has access to a limited number of online services.

It comes to something when the most exciting features for D-Links Boxee are the bug fixes to stop your hardware crashing! Owners had been complaining of crashing whilst playing MP4 files or indexing videos and issues with the HD option.

Boxee owners were hoping for Hulu and Netflix additions so they can stop just watching Youtube videos, but it looks like that will have to wait.

Boxee Cheaper Than Google TV And Available In 33 Countries

Boxee competition for Google TV?

Boxee has now launched it’s internet tv set-top box complete with updated user interface and features in 33 Countries priced at $199. This price puts it below the price of Google TV and they have also promised Hulu Plus and Netflix by the years end.

The D-Link Boxee Box can connect to a TV and stream tv shows, video and movies from the Internet, and can also access video content from local networks and storage drives. Although still more expensive than Apple TV, the Boxee promises a much more open service.

The box plugs into a TV using a HDMI cable and you can connect to your home network using wi-fi or Ethernet connection. The Boxee supports HD streaming in 1080p, running at 60 frames per second and is compatibile with many codecs via it’s open source structure. The box also comes equipped with a remote control with 4-way D-pad navigation and QWERTY keypad.

Andrew Knippen of Boxee said the company will partner with Netflix by end 2010, Hulu plus ‘in the near future’. Boxee have fallen out with Hulu in the past ending up with Hulu blocking streams from the device after pressure from the TV networks. However, now they have Hulu Plus which they are happily running on every device known to man.

Boxee appears to be having a clear run streaming at present, but may go the way of the Google TV platform, which has been blocked from streaming the major tv channels.

Boxee Internet TV Hardware Launches Into The Market

In an ever increasingly crowded internet tv hardware market comes the new Boxee Box by D-Link retailing for $200. The new hardware allows viewers to access online tv, movie streaming and other online services on their tv sets.

The Boxee has received critical acclaim and is capable of playing pretty much any media file formats you can throw at it. It can be hooked up to the home network and shows both free and pay to view TV shows and movies. It can also show photo’s, play music and video from the net as well, and all in glorious 1080p HD with 5.1 surround sound for listening pleasure. The Vudu movie rental service will also be included in the Boxee media center software.

Speaking about the launch, Rod St. Michel, vp of consumer sales D-Link said:- “We’ve seen amazing demand for the Boxee Box across all of our pre-order partners in the US and internationally. The market though is getting congested with everyone from Google TV to Apple To TiVo having a presence in the space. Hulu are pushing their $9.99 per month subscription streaming service, and are putting it on many devices such as the Sony PlayStation 3, Roku, and TiVo boxes. It is unknown if the Hulu Plus service will appear on Boxee at this time.

Boxee have previously had a run in with Hulu after they blocked them from streaming its content. Plus the box will suffer a similar fate to Google TV, who cannot stream popular tv shows from the big 3 networks, NBC, ABC and CBS. It is now clear that the networks want viewers to pay for watching online tv on the big screen, or watch the traditional over the air broadcast.

Boxee Gets Ready To Launch By Adding Vudu On Demand Movies

The long awaited Boxee internet set-top tv box will come with the latest movies to watch on demand. Manufactured by D-Link, the Boxee will give users access to the Walmart owned Vudu movie rental service, offering movie viewing on the same day as the DVD is released.

Boxee lets users access a library of both free and pay to view content from the internet, along with being able to access to your own digital content on your home network. Added enhancements such as logical menus and album art complete the package. TV channels and services available include Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central, CNN, Comedy Central, Facebook, Myspace, Youtube, Flickr and Picasa with more coming. The service also allows social networking and sharing of some content.

The D-Link Boxee Box is a small device similar to Apple TV and gives full 1080p HD with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. The Boxee Box includes two USB ports and Ethernet, HDMI, optical and audio ports. It is not so good news on PC though as the definition will be in standard only. The company say that using Boxee on a PC is just as a supplement to the Boxee experience.

The D-Link Boxee is scheduled to hit the shops on November 10th at a pricepoint of $200.

Amongst all the headlines and fanfare around the new Apple TV box and Google’s venture into the tv market, software start up company Boxee are to launch the eagerly awaited set-top box by November. Putting it in direct competition with it’s massively bigger rivals.

Australia Getting Big On Internet TV

Internet tv has taken off big time in the US with Hulu and in the UK with the BBC iPlayer leading the pack, but what about our friends down under? The Aussies are also getting into internet tv in a big way, emphasised by the Sony launch of their new Bravia range of internet connected televisions.

Apart from Sony, internet media software player Boxee are joining the party too. Well known for their internet streaming to tv software that runs on many set-top boxes and other tv connected hardware.

Sony Internet TV coming to Australia

The Sony launch of the Bravia range of televisions are impressing all who see them, giving users access to SBS and Seven’s Catch Up TV services with iView coming soon. The great thing about these catch up websites is that you now have tv on demand straight to your tv set for zero cost, and Sony are talking about a movie on demand service too.

Although the Bravia Internet Video is currently only on the new tv sets, there are plans to give users access using both the playstation 3 and Sony Blu-ray players.

Its almost a shame that its always so sunny in Australia as many tv lovers will find it hard to tear themselves away from the tv with all this new streaming content. Mind you, mobile tv will probably be coming next so you can watch and surf.

Boxee Lets You Watch Free Streaming On Apple TV

Boxee Beta, media software that pulls in content from tv shows, movies photos and even music to your pc is now available on Apple TV.

The software is still basically a ‘hack’ due to Apple’s software restrictions, but who doesnt want to stream Internet tv content like TV shows and movies to their pc or TV screen?. The app allows streaming of existing media you may have on your pc too.

There has been a beta version of Boxee available for Apple TV for some time, but it became outdated when a newer, slicker version was of the beta. Now there is an installer for the Apple TV which makes it simple to install Boxee software.

To get it up and running involves a few shenanigans which are covered on the Boxee website. After insatlling a new “Boxee” option appears on the main menu. Select this and Boxee will be installed. You then have a decent media computer instead of the restricted Apple box.

You can find full instructions on Boxee’s website for installing the Beta software and get watching. Improvements include searching shows by season and/or episodes plus upgraded social networking features.

Boxee To Offer Pay Per View Streaming

If your into Boxee then you may soon be able to watch some premium content – but at a price.

Boxee is planning to release a pay to view service this summer that will let viewers purchase TV shows, movies or apps with a flick of the wrist (actually a button press on the remote). The development will allow Boxee to show content that was previously not available to its viewers, says the company.

Boxee Going Pay Per View?

The CEO of Boxee Avner Ronen said on their blog :- “The content owners will be able to package and price as they wish, including pay-per-view and subscription. Content partners will have the flexibility to decide what they make available, whether it’s premium content, content from their existing library, or extras that will never make it on air.”

In return, Boxee will take a percentage of around 30% of each sale. Boxee currently aggregate content from various sources such as TV channels, online video and even Netflix. The company has become popular with users who want to stream content from their PCs to their TV. You can get the Boxee software for free. The company plans to launch a set-top box during the year in in partnership with D-Link.

It hasnt all been plain sailing though, streaming free content managed to upset Hulu last year when Hulu twice shut down Boxee’s access to it. Boxee responded by releasing a work-around. Hulu and Boxee have declared a truce for the present time.

The proposed Boxee pay to view platform could reassure content companies and TV channels of the software’s ability to monetize its users. Ronen believes the internet will be the fourth method of distribution for content after cable, satellite and IPTV.

“The connected living room represents a new medium, one in which great value could be generated,” he says.

The problem will be, that when it comes to paying to view and the swathes of choice around. Will anyone want to pay for the Boxee experience?

Boxee To Launch New Internet TV Set-Top Box

Boxee have released plans for the next generation of its Internet TV software which it will put into a set-top box due for release early next year. Revealed in New York, Boxee have entered into a deal with Taiwanese network manufacturer D-Link, to construct a device that lets viewers watch and browse the net from their television set.

Boxee compiles videos and streams from sites such as Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central and Pandora, and delivers the content in a tv listings style mixed with social networking.

The service has been a success with users who like the vast selection of internet content which beats the limited television experience controlled by the big networks.

Until this point, the Boxee software has only worked on a PC or Mac, although some Apple users managed to install it on the Apple set-top box.

Boxee now wants to move beyond that limited user base. “Today the reality is that hooking up your laptop to your television, or putting Boxee on an Apple TV, is not a mainstream experience,” said Avner Ronen, Boxee’s chief executive.

Mr. Ronen said the relationship with D-Link was the first of many deals with consumer electronics companies. “A growing number of companies see a real need to bring Internet to the TV, and they realize people will pay a premium for devices like connected Blu-ray players and HDTVs,” he said.

Boxee is facing an increasingly crowded market for such devices. More and more Blu-ray players, video game consoles and HDTVs can connect to the Internet and access streaming media services from Netflix, Amazon.com and other companies.

Set-top boxes that perform similar functions have not been mainstream hits. Roku, a company that sells a box that primarily receives videos from Amazon and Netflix, says it has sold only a few hundred thousand devices.

But Boxee and its backers believe that these kinds of devices are too limited, and they draw comparisons to older mobile phones that receive only the Web services chosen by a particular wireless carrier.

Even though Boxee has forged its own relationships with tv and video websites, any company can make its videos available through the service. “This is all about consumer choice,” Mr. Ronen said.

Boxee also said it would introduce a more polished test version of its software by the beginning of next year.

Boxee, backed by $10 million in venture capital, has tried to bring into its service the network television shows posted on Hulu.com, a joint venture between NBC, Fox and ABC. But those networks do not want people able to receive the Web videos on their TVs, instead of watching actual broadcasts, which carry more valuable advertising.

As a result, Hulu has largely blocked Boxee from adding its videos. Boxee says it is currently working on a Web browser, based on open-source technology from Mozilla, maker of the Firefox browser, so its users can manually go to any site and watch the video there. “Its not as good an experience, but we want to make as much content available as possible on Boxee,” said Andrew Kippen, a Boxee spokesman.

James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research, said such an approach could end up undermining the promise Boxee is making to customers who spend money on the set-top box. “If it’s not done with explicit permission, that content is always at risk,” he said. “There is no guarantee if you buy the box you will have all this content in perpetuity.”

One thing is for sure, next year looks pretty interesting for internet tv fans.

Internet TV wars update – Boxee regains Hulu streams. Then loses them again

Update on Internet TV wars. Pre emptive strike repelled by hostile Hulu.

Streaming TV media center, Boxee which was last month banned from streaming Hulu content has found a way around the missing content problem. In a daring manouvere they let users watch streams from RSS feeds as anyone with a browser can. This allowed Boxee users to watch TV shows from Hulu online, for a while. Hulu after catching wind of the plan immediately blocked the RSS access from Boxee’s browser.

Of course it was no surprise, after the initial ban caused by content owners to Hulu demanding its removal from Boxee, they dont want it happening via the back door.

Streaming success Hulu, owned by News Corp. and NBC, which pulled its video streams from Boxee and TV.com last month at the request content providers to the site said in a statement:-

“While we stubbornly believe in this brave new world of media convergence, bumps and all. We are also steadfast in our belief that the best way to achieve our ambitious, never-ending mission of making media easier for users is to work hand in hand with content owners.”

Boxee’s CEO Avner Ronen sais in a blog post:- “Like IE, Firefox, or Google Reader, the RSS reader supports Google Video, Yahoo, YouTube and feeds from many other Web sites. While it’s not as attractive or robust as our previous Hulu application, it will additionally support Hulu’s public RSS feeds.”

He continued:- “The fact that it’s becoming easy to consume Internet video on a TV brings into question many of the industry’s business models that developed before the Web. That’s part of the reason why Hulu asked to be removed from Boxee. Our meetings over the past week weren’t able to change that. But the people in the industry ‘get it’. They are users. They read the blogs. They talk with users. They are trying to adjust to a new reality, but they need time.”

This new RSS feature wasnt just to please its Hulu missing users, there are plenty more apps coming from the new app store ‘App Box’. This will allow users locate and install new apps and plugins.

Will this be the end of Boxee trying to reclaim the missing streams? Watch this space.

Internet TV wars getting nasty

After a cosy start to showing TV online, the internet TV companies are starting to get nasty.

As reported earlier this week Hulu, has removed its content from both TV.com and Boxee. TV.com is owned by rival broadcaster CBS – Boxee writes software allowing set top boxes to stream internet TV. And why is Hulu showing its nasty side? Well it seems that the website is bowing to pressure from the owners of the content and also the cable companies.

Next we hear that cable TV companies Time Warner and Comcast are in negotiations to make some of their premium content available to subscribers. The deal will probably involve free streaming to existing subscribers of the service. This has already happened with Satellite TV company Sky.

Is it all a bit too late now though? People are used to free streaming TV and will not be wanting to pay for it. The obvious solution would be a pay per video or movie system, so users can pay as and when they like. But only for the latest movies and TV shows – Everything else has to stay free.

So do you hold off buying that set top box? Well, i would say wait and see what happens. In every war there are winners and losers, but before all that. It usually gets very nasty.

Hulu getting tough with TV.com and Boxee

In a shocking move. Online TV website Hulu has decided that it doesnt want its TV content being streamed on and via other websites.

It has forced both Tv.com and Boxee to remove all Hulu content from its services. Boxees Blog said:-

Two weeks ago Hulu called and told us their content partners were asking them to remove Hulu from Boxee, Boxee said in the post. We tried (many times) to plead the case for keeping Hulu on Boxee, but on Friday of this week, in good faith, we will be removing it. You can see their blog post about the issues they are facing.

Hulu have said that the problem lies with its content partners who are not happy with their streams being shown on other platforms other than via the official Hulu site. The commented:-

Our content providers requested that we turn off access to our content via the Boxee product, Hulu wrote. We are respecting their wishes.

CEO of Boxee Avner Ronen said that he is disappointed and is hoping to convince Hulu executives that Boxee is good for the topstreaming TV and movie website and its partners.

I hope that they will realize the opportunity is greater than the threat,

Hulu has also removed all content from TV.com who were showing big viewing numbers online. TV.com owned by CBS has been affected due to a contractual issue.

On the face of it, it seems a very shortsighted way of doing things that may well backfire on the mighty Hulu. They should take a lesson from the music industry. If people want to see content then they will. It may also be the networks wanting more viewers watching the traditional broadcast.
