New Survey Shows Viewers Want To Watch Internet Content On Regular TV
TV viewers would prefer to watch internet streams on their big screen tv rather than watch tv on their computers, says a new survey by market research firm In-Stat. The survey showed that 26% of US consumer watch Internet TV more than once every week, but they dont see internet tv as a replacement, But rather a compliment to traditional TV viewing.
The survey – “OTT Video Platforms, Devices, and Consumer Expectations,” showed that around 40% of respondents from a broadband enabled household were looking for a combination of internet and tv services. Around three quarters were seeking all their tv and video content, including websites such as Hulu and YouTube from a single device hooked up or built in to their tv.
“Consumers want the best of both worlds: Pay TV and OTT Video,” said In-Stat analyst Keith Nissen. “Nearly 40% of consumer broadband household respondents want a combination of linear and on-demand TV, and nearly three quarters want to acquire all their video content from their pay TV operator.”
The study also found that computers are still mainly the primary devices used for viewing Internet TV, but consumers are increasingly using other devices to route Internet video to their TVs, such as media adapters, gaming consoles, Blu-ray players and Internet-enabled TVs. The number of Web-enabled devices in operation in the United States is expected to grow to 102 million by 2013, up from 24 million at the end of 2009.
Other results from the survey include:-
- Although computers are mainly used for watching Internet TV, consumers are using other internet enabled devices more frequently.
- Consumers make use of a range of devices to get Internet streams to their TVs, including gaming consoles, Blu-ray players and Internet-enabled Televisions.
- The number of internet enabled devices in use in the US, at the end of 2009 was 24 million. This number is expected to rise to 102 million by 2013.
The survey follows on from a recent report from Deloitte showning that viewers are keen to watch more and more Internet TV and video, but they want to watch it on their regular television set.
