Survey Shows Viewers Are Loving 3DTV

Is 3DTV just a fad or is it here for the long haul? According to a new study by DEG, 3DTV owners could not be happier with the extra dimension. And it looks like 3DTV is here to stay.

Viewers are loving 3DTV

The study was conducted for the DEG (Digital Entertainment Group) by market research firm SmithGeiger, and called “3DTV Owners: A Closer Look at The New World of Immersive Home Entertainment. ” It shows that buyers are in general not worried about price, and optimistic about the future of 3D HDTV and Blu-ray 3D.

Respondents to the survey Respondents said that the upgrade to 3D was “well worth the price,” and that they paid only a small extra fee for 3D capability. On average respondents spent $2,000 on their TV, which for most (89%), was 50 inches or larger in screen size..

were asked a number of searching 3D type questions about their 3DTV experience.

Wearing 3D Glasses

Always seen as a bone of contention and a reason for slow growth of 3DTV are the glasses required. However the study showed that wearing 3D glasses was not such a big issue.

The study found that out of 3,100 3DTV owners surveyed, only a handful experienced any discomfort when using active shutter 3D glasses. 83% said that it takes either no time or just a few minutes to adjust to wearing 3D glasses.

Other facts from the survey:-

74% of respondents own two or more pairs of glasses and 33% brought an additional pair at purchase.

52% received at least one pair of 3D glasses with their TV purchase.

Average number of glasses per home is 2.38.

What people watch in 3D

When it comes to watching 3DTV, top content is movies, sports, nature documentaries and playing games.

3D Movies on Blu-ray 3D is most watched by 78%, then comes animated movies on Blu-ray with 77%. Nature and wildlife gets 75%. Top sports was watching football games with 67%.

Delivery of 3DTV

When it comes to getting the 3D delivered to your spanking new TV, 70% use a 3D enabled Blu-ray player. 44% bought a package deal that included a Blu-ray player that came with the 3DTV.

28% own a PlayStation3 console and from those, 78% have upgraded the PS3 to watch 3D movies and videogames. A further 40% of respondents get their 3D content from satellite or cable.

Other interesting facts coming from the report include the fact that 3D has made them watch more TV. 24% said they watch more television, in 3D and 2D since buying a 3DTV.

Once bitten by the 3D bug, many dont want to watch anything else with 85% saying they would prefer to most or all of their TV in 3D. So it seems that 3D has a positive effect on buyers, meaning they should (so long as conytent keeps coming), stick with the format. And with 3DTV sales expected to grow 500% this year, who says 3D was just a gimmick?
