Starz To Launch Digital Streaming Platform
Starz, the cable network who brought Pixar and Sony movies to Netflix, but then cancelled the streaming agreement, are to create an online platform similar to HBO Go offering customers Starz content on a variety of devices.
The Starz streaming agreement with Netflix ends in February 2012, and Starz are planning an app to allow streaming on a variety of platforms such as game consoles, tablets and smartphones. Customers may need an existing subscription to the Starz network via their cable or satellite company.
Announcing the deal, Starz President Chris Albrecht said that the company was also looking into offering the service to users with no subscriptions and allow users to just access the Starz network of channels for a low monthly fee.
For Netflix subscribers who number 21 million, the loss is a big deal as they lose premium content. And it is partly why the streaming company are seeing big subscriber losses. But Netflix have played down the loss, saying that Starz content accounted for just 8% of its mainstream content.
But they have still been snapping up new content to try and mitigate the loss. Just yesterday, Netflix have just reveled they are broadcasting a revived Arrested Development.
They also recently renewed a deal with ABC, another with the CW and a new deal with AMC amongst a slew of content grabbing for Netflix.

If Starz creates an app, I definitely won’t download it. I never watched anything that they had on Netflix anyways, and I got rid of Starz when I subscribed through my provider and employer last year. They are pretty much asking a premium price for inferior content. Netflix was a fantastic company, but the reason I dropped them was because the increase came without any incentive to stay, such as more content even as they are going to lose Starz. DISH Network offered the Blockbuster Movie Pass so I thought I would try it out. For $10 a month, I get DVD exchanges in-store and by mail, streaming to my DVR or computer, 20 channels on my lineup, plus video games and Blu-rays are included in any exchange (which Netflix always charged extra for, and didn’t have games)! I like being able to see movies almost a month earlier than Netflix. For now, the Blockbuster Movie Pass is only available to DISH Network subscribers, but since Blockbuster listens to customers, they are working on making the service available for those who don’t have a TV service. Blockbuster is a great alternative if you’ve recently cancelled Netflix too.
