Spielberg Smash Finds Stars For Pilot
Flash Forward star Jack Davenport is set to be a co-star alongside Debra Messing and former American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee in Steven Spielberg’s hour long musical pilot for NBC, Smash, said to be inspired by the success of Fox’s Glee.
The pilot, which is being produced by DreamWorks TV and UMS, will follow the story of a variety of characters from the cross-section of society who find the common goal of producing a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway. The characters are ’led’ by musical composer Tom (currently uncast), and lyricist Julia (Messing).
English actor Davenport (notable for starring roles in FlashForward and the Pirates of the Carribean movie series) is cast as Derek, who is described as a ‘fierce and intelligent’ stage choreographer looking for his next big project to work on. The move for Davenport will be seen as somewhat as a coup for the producers, as he was also considering an offer to star in Marc Cherry’s ABC pilot Hallelujah.
Katharine McPhee, who was runner up on series 5 of Idol, is being cast as a ‘beautiful struggling actress’ who goes to great lengths to try for the role of Marilyn Monroe in the show. McPhee is currently looking to move into more regular acting work, as proven by her pilot debut last season in NBC’s half-hour effort The Pink House. In addition to the Smash role, she will soon be appearing in rom-com You May Not Kiss the Bride.Megan Hilty will also be in the pilot, although her role is currently unknown.
Spielberg’s project is starting to come together now, having also landed a writer (Theresa Rebeck) and a director (Michael Mayer) for the executive production team. Will this new show be a Smash hit, as it takes on the best of the industry?
