South Park Take Bites Out Of Apple

Popular veteran animated comedy South Park is to return for series 15 on Wednesday evening (27 April) on Comedy Central (UK viewers will need to wait until 6 May, where they will see the first two episodes of series 15 back-to-back on Comedy Central (before switching to air two days after the US launch of episodes)).

For this episode the often up-to-date controversial comedy has finally (and surprisingly) chosen Steve Jobs’ Apple, and their many new developments, as the main target of their parodies.

The episode is titled ‘HUMANCENTiPAD’, and is suggested to feature a mash-up of the iPad (which is said to have sold over 4.7m copies since the start of the year (due mainly to the much-anticipated March release of the iPad 2)) and the 2010 Dutch horror film, The Human Centipede (which sees a mad scientist merge three humans into a ‘single being’).

In a move that might be considered somewhat tongue-in-cheek even for the limit-pushing creators and producers of South Park (Trey Parker & Matt Stone), South Park Studios have launched a new official app for Apple’s iOS systems just days before they are due to mock them. An updated edition of the ‘South Park Avatar Creator’ (priced at $0.99), is set to add to the 80,000+ apps available for the iPad, and will allow users to create their own ‘South Park character’ from templates, with the ability to save multiple avatars, link them to websites such as Facebook, and create customised clothing from the avatar on Zazzle ready for purchase, amongst a collection of features that are on the Internet version of the app, on the South Park Studios website.

Fans of the long-running series might also have another reason to celebrate, as in addition to the new app, the launch of series 15 (which will be another pair of 7-episode runs this year, like in recent series), and the recent US release of series 14 on DVD and Blu-ray, it has been hinted that Parker and Stone have reached a verbal agreement with Comedy Central to further the show until at least 2013, meaning the series will reach 17 seasons. The show’s success could be put down to its mixture of current events and original storylines seen in the series’ 209 episodes, put alongside the edgy humour that can often land the producers in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

The latest episode, meanwhile, is said to focus on two of the four main characters, as Kyle signs up to get involved with the development of a ‘revolutionary new product’ from Apple (but gets more than he bargained for), while the sub-plot shows Cartman lamenting the fact that he doesn’t even have an original iPad yet, and sets about blaming his long-suffering mother for this. Will series 15 live up to the show’s high expectations?
