Sony To Expand Its Playstation Network Into An Itunes Beater?
Sony have been dabbling in the world of digital downloads, including movies for a while with its successful PlayStation Network. The network has over 33 million users during its first 3 years of existence providing a combination of free and paid content.
So, for early next year it is planning to release a online content service, provisionally to be called the “Sony Online Service,”. The service will bring online movies, music, books, games and other media to connected electronic equipment including Bravia televisions, mp3 players, laptop computers and mobile devices/mobile phones.

The company is looking to gain an edge in the increasingly tough consumer electronics market. Kaz Hirai, executive vice president of Sony commented:- “I’d like it to get off the ground as quickly as possible. Earlier in the year is more preferable.”
The PlayStation Network currently offers content from all the major Hollywood studios and several TV networks in addition to Sony’s own content and Sony hopes to duplicate this on the new online service.
Looking to the future Hirai said the service could be expanded to products offered by other manufacturers, but that isn’t initially being considered.
“The first priority is for us to make sure the Sony Online Service is a point of differentiation for all Sony devices. Given what we bring to the table, the range of content and breadth of hardware in combination, if done right will be a successful formula,” he said.
Sony have, like many in the electronics market, had some rough financial times and is struggling during the current recession. Apple on the other hand has had record sales and this quarter looks promising too. Sony have decided that online content is the way to go. And with millions of Sony users waiting to download, now is the time to come up with its own itunes store.
