Sony Take On The Job Of A Movie

While the recent death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs may have put the brakes on the development of some of his company’s products (as well as their rivals), it is not slowing down Hollywood, as Sony have launched an expensive and fast-acting bid to claim the film rights to his life story.

The news follows the impending release of the biography Steve Jobs, written by journalist Walter Isaacson to include his interviews with Jobs from the last two years, pushed forward (first from March 2012 to 21 November, and now to 24 October) after Jobs’ unforeseen passing.

Sony Pictures are thought to have reached an arrangement with Isaacson and his publishers, in that they will pay $3m for the movie rights should production go ahead, and a compensation payment of $1m if the movie is not made, though it is ironic that the signing was made with a studio owned by a Japanese electronics company that could be seen as a competitor to Apple in some markets.

On the creative background side of the deal, Sony are notable for having produced business-based hits such as Moneyball and The Social Network, so the publishers may have believed this was the best place to go for an accurate and respectful portrayal, especially as the producer of those two films, Aaron Sorkin, is being lined up for the Steve Jobs production.

A passage from Isaacson’s book reveals that the man himself would probably want a movie to go ahead, as he explained why he authorised the biography: “I wanted my kids to know me. I wasn’t always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did.”

While the subject of the film will certainly draw appeal, how would a hypothetical Steve Jobs: The Movie fare in terms of box office against the more high-profile hits (including 3D re-releases by Pixar, another company that Jobs was involved in) that will undoubtedly be direct competition?
