Sony Create 3D On Demand Update
Sony yesterday revealed their latest update to their 3D connected TV range, and it is one that means viewers will no longer have to wait for specialised content to come on the air, with a brand new (and free) on-demand streaming of content specifically in 3D.
The content is said to feature only on connected TV’s from Sony, and includes the recent matches from the Wimbledon Tennis Championships broadcast by the BBC.
Content is said to cover a wide selection of genres, such as film (and trailers), sports, documentaries, and music, amongst others. Video game trailers are also covered by the service, as Sony looks to cross-promote its 3D-ready PlayStation 3 games console.
Sony have released 30 titles at the launch of the service, with the Tennis fixtures, a Green Hornet movie trailer, and 3D PlayStation 3 game demonstrations at the forefront of the package, which is open to users in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, and the British Isles, with additional plans to launch the service (which requires a minimum connection speed of 6MBps, and a recommended 10MBps) on Sony-branded 3D Blu-ray players and ‘home theatre systems’ in the near future.
Sony UK development manager Edd Uzzell said of the new update, which is being dubbed ‘The Sony 3D Experience’: “Sony is committed to creating great 3D experiences by combining the best content with a full HD 3D. This free service delivers exclusive content directly to your home via any BRAVIA 3D TV and straight out of the box. We will continue to work with partners to give our customers access to more great 3D entertainment.”
The 3D Experience adds to the level of connectivity and interactive services on Sony’s range of connected TV’s including Facebook, YouTube, LoveFilm, and BBC iPlayer. How long will it be before these services are 3D-ready?
