Why Social networking Has Changed My TV Watching Life

Social networking is watching TV

When I sat down to watch tv on Sunday night I realized that watching tv for me had changed forever, resulting in both good and bad news. The tv show in question was the X-Factor, but you can substitute any voting show such as American idol, Im a celebrity or pretty much any other popular show.

As I watched the different acts performing, I was buzzed on my iPhone by various tweets and Facebook messages from friends. “What a load of rubbish.”, “She is too old to be wearing that.”, “Why don’t we go down the pub instead of watching this junk” etc. Etc. It made me realise that the big difference with watching tv now as opposed to a year ago was the amount of social interaction happening whilst I watched the tv show.

everyone nowadays, has either a smartphone or a laptop, maybe even a tablet pc or iPad. Whatever they own, they are airing their views using the massive popularity of the big social networking websites. A recent survey showed that viewers want quality tv shows and social interaction, and i can see why. It’s the first survey that i see happening in front of my eyes.

The social networking revolution then took an ugly turn the following night. on Sunday was the live public vote off, but I missed the beginning so watched the DVR recording. Being 30 minutes behind everyone else is normally not a problem, however this night it was. tweets started coming in saying “I can’t believe he was voted off” or “how is he still in this competition.”, “Fix.” etc. I was finding out the results before I managed to see them.

this has made me change how I watch TV. I daren’t miss watching live now, or I have to put my phone/laptop/tablet away if I watch a recording. But I don’t want to! I love the social interaction that I have watching the big shows, I feel like I’m missing out if I watch a recording.

so whilst Internet tv streaming has not changed my life and I can dip in and out as I choose. The big difference that HAS changed my life is social networking 24 hours each day, while I watch tv, sit on a bus or go shopping etc.

And you know the reason why am I looking forward to getting an internet connected or Google TV? not for streaming tv so much, but having a window on my screen running Facebook and Twitter.
