While it would be expected for popular brands such as VEVO to have long been ahead of the milestones in question, YouTube’s range of original content still carries the highest subscriber numbers, with the comedy channel Smosh recently reported as the leader that yesterday made a landmark fall.
Following on from being the first original channel to break the 7 million subscribers barrier on 21 January, Smosh (a comedy duo of Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla) were first to gain over 8 million subscribers just 41 days later on 3 March, according to Tubefilter.
The statistics make the pair the ‘All-Time Most-Subscribed Channels’ chart leader on YouTube, with the weekly videos helping Hecox and Padilla to an estimated 24,390 subscribers per day between the ‘million’ milestones (also described as 1,016 new subscriptions every hour and 16 each minute). Padilla tweeted upon breaking the landmark: “Still can’t believe 8 million of you are now subscribed to our channel. I luv you guys :)”
While former Maker Studios affiliate Ray William Johnson was leading the original channel chart at the start of this year, he was quickly overtaken by 7-year-old Smosh, who currently show no signs of slowing their growth in figures. Johnson’s position as #2 is now also being threatened by YouTube personality Jenna Marbles, currently on 7.4m subscribers, so who will be the second to reach the 8m landmark?
At the rate they are going, though, is the more appropriate question how long it will be before Smosh hit 9 or 10 million subscribers? Two pieces of recent example material can be seen below to try and reel you in and help them along:
