Sky TV jumping aboard the online tv train
Satellite TV giant BSkyB has jumped aboard the online TV wagon by announcing it is streaming some popular Sky channels onto the Internet.
The new service which will integrate with Sky’s existing online platform will allow customers to view online premium channels without needing a satellite dish or needing to be a subscriber of its satellite tv services.
Due to be launched during early 2009, the service will offer movies, tv shows and premium sports channels Sky Sports 1 and 2 for online viewing.
Mike Darcey Sky chief said at the Media Guardian Changing Media summit:- ‘Sky is still in negotiations’ with Hollywood major studios over whether it will also be able to offer movie channels and such US hit TV shows ‘Lost’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ on its online platform.
He also said that channels and the full line up were still to be finalized and until then, pricing details were not known. The ongoing issue of bandwidth use could also be a factor.
Darcey also commented:- ‘We need to finalize decisions on price and finalize the channel proposition,” Darcey said. “While the laptop won’t replace the TV experience for most people, we’re creating more choices to allow customers to choose the option that suits their lifetime.’
More proof if needed that the future of TV viewing will be online.
