Sky TV Add Sky Player To Freeview Set-Top Boxes

Sky tv, the biggest UK satellite tv provider is adding its internet TV service Sky Player in a deal with set-top box manufacturer Humax Co. Sky owned by media mogul, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. is using the deal to get more coverage for its online catch up and live tv service.  The deal with Humax will expand Sky’s services onto Freeview HD boxes.

Sky Player coming to freeview

Sky’s Chief Exec, Jeremy Darroch said:- “From mobile devices to broadband-enabled TVs, these channels are making ‘TV anywhere’ a reality.”. The Freeview system which was launched in 2002 in the UK, lets viewers watch digital free-to-air channels for free, although premium content can be paid for. Hence the Sky interest, as they dont like to giva anything away for free.

Sky managed to gain approval for the deal after UK regulator Ofcom after they made Sky give premium sports channels to competitors at set wholesale prices.

Sky is on the one hand expanding coverage of the Sky Player, including putting the service on Xbox , via Fetch TV and 3View Freeview broadband-enabled set-top boxes, and Cello’s Freeview internet-enabled TV sets. Whilst on the other hand still heavily lobbying against Project Canvas, who plan to also launch on Freeview. The deal with Humax, who are the UK’s biggest Freeview box supplier, will put the Sky Player on both its HD-FOX T2 box and its HD digital TV recorder.
