Sky launch online TV if you dont mind paying!

Major satellite broadcaster Sky TV is offering a new pay monthly on demand TV service letting customers view online TV channels on PC.
The new package available for UK & Ireland customers is called Base Entertainment Pack, offering access to a select number of channels including Disney Channel, the National Geographic channel amongst others for £15 per month reduced to half price until the end of January.
More channels are promised soon with no price increases but viewers will need to download and install Microsoft’s Silverlight media app to view the service.
Extra premium channels such as Sky Sports will cost extra which, on the face of it means that standard Sky programming is cheaper. Sky’s currently offering their Variety pack, free evening/weekend calls and 2mbps Sky Broadband for £17 per month.
Sky’s most affordable package that includes all its Sports channels will set you back £36 and Sky customers that are on multiroom or Broadband Max subscriptions will get the new service at no extra charge.
Are viewers willing to shell out for video on demand services which are available free from other broadcasters, although different content? And is the middle of the biggest credit crunch on earth the time to launch this service? Who knows, we will see how much – if any market share is picked up from Sky TV.
