Simon Cowell Plans To Put BGT Winner Into Orbit
It seems that Simon Cowell is not quite done in his efforts to improve the prize offerings on ITV talent competition Britain’s Got Talent, as he today revealed that he is holding discussions with Sir Richard Branson to attempt to give the next winner of the show a free trip into space with him.
The spaceflight, which would reportedly reach just above orbit on a plane-style vehicle operated by Virgin Galactic, would require the winner to meet certain physical and mental health-based requirements that generally comes with journeys into space, but Cowell is confident that it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that few would turn down in that position, and a fun experimental supplement to the recently-raised £500,000 cash prize (and slot on the end-of year Royal Variety Show) that the winner will be already guaranteed to recieve.
Cowell said of the reasoning behind the move, how it could happen, and what it would mean: “Richard Branson is the sponsor of the show with Virgin. We are trying to work out a way so that the winner of the show gets to go up in the spacecraft and will be the first person to perform in space. I’m being serious. You could be the first singer or dog act, whatever, performing in space.
He continued by saying that it would fulfil a personal ambition, and that Branson is very keen and ’on-board’ with the plan: “I would go on the spaceship myself – you have to have a lot of training. I love the idea that, if they are up for it, then they have the option of performing in front of the whole planet in space. But I will make it happen. If it had been a few years ago Susan Boyle could have been singing ‘Unchained Melody’ in front of the whole planet. This is worth tens of millions of pounds, but Richard genuinely is up for doing it. I’m not winding you up, Richard would pay for it.”
Cowell summarised by taking a dig at upcoming BBC rival show The Voice UK, stating: “Amazing. What does the winner of The Voice get?”
