Showtime cable 300x300 Showtime Testing Online TV Service

Showtime is going online

Cable giant Showtime are said to be launching an online streaming seervice for subscribers, giving them access to on demand streaming of premium tv shows and movies. The online service will be similar to rival HBO’s Go streaming service.

Already Showtime have dabbled with online streaming, supplying a small number of tv shows from its site, plus it has put a few streams onto TV.com who funnily enough are owned by Showtime owner CBS. The new service will obviously offer a shedload more content, and it is expected to be available to subscribers only.

The cable companies are all looking at ways to benefit from online streaming without alienating existing tv companies that show their content, and without losing subscribers.

A Showtime spokesman said:- “There’s nothing to announce at this time,”.

The HBO service is available to the 40 million subscribers of HBO and Cinemax for free, called HBO Go, the service has streams available of the channel’s hit tv shows and movies and is designed to offer added value that may keep subscribers with the service. The streams are available online before appearing on DVD rental services such as Netflix.
