Sezmi Next generation TV system coming soon

Sezmi Corp based in Silicon Alley have unveiled a new style TV system to compete with the Satellite and Cable TV big boys. Its offering is unique in that it combines several different technologies to deliver its content.

For the consumer, monthly fees will be half of cable and satellite providers. The system comprises a set top box that can receive programs in 3 different ways.

Online TV over the internet streaming content via broadband

Digital TV via an antennae

The third way involves using local TV stations who will transmit basic cable programming via vacant areas of their airwaves. Channels such as Nickelodeon and Discovery channels. Because of the limited space available the stations will only be able to show a limited line up, some of it in High Definition. However Sezmi plans to counter this by having the stations transmit the most watched shows and save to the set top hard drives a bit like the BBC’s Iplayer, creating TV on Demand.

“The TV space has been waiting for someone to put it all together much like Apple did for digital music” when it combined its iTunes music store with the iPod music player, said Phil Wiser, chairman and president of Sezmi.

It is hoped that Sezmi will partner with phone companies and wireless carriers to sell the service as part of a bundle including broadband and phone services. A low cost TV service could help landline phone companies fight the threat from cable companies offering cheap phone calls in their package.

It is thought the service will roll out later this year.
