Seth McFarlane To Yabba Dabba Do A Remake
Following on from the news that all three of his animated comedy series were recently renewed, Seth McFarlane now seems to have been entrusted by Fox to produce a remake of the classic show which began the genre.
The man responsible for current hits Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show, will be remaking the first-ever popular animated primetime television series The Flintstones, meaning that classic 1960′s characters such as Fred Flintstone and his best friend Barney Rubble will have more prehistoric adventures set in Bedrock, a stone-age version of a modern town.
McFarlane announced the deal in a Fox Network presentation in New York City (USA). He said of his personal pride at the challenge: “The very first cartoon character I drew at age 2 was Fred Flintstone. So it’s appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who’s too good for him.”
The actor and producer also eased fears that fans of the original version would would be lost to a new format, with promises that the revamped series would be a fusion of the old format and more relateable content to a modern-day audience. He added: “The characters will look the same but the only thing that will change is the stories. What’s the [prehistoric] version of an iPod?”
Fox’s President of Entertaiment Kevin Reilly chipped in with the network’s view, stating: “The Flintstones are among the funniest and most beloved characters in television history, and we can’t wait to introduce them to a whole new generation on Fox. Fox has long been home to iconic families like the Simpsons and the Griffins, so I have no doubt that the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going to fit right in on our air.”
Actress Edie Falco is said to have been in on the revival as she suggests that she is being lined up for a voice acting role on the series, and is tipping producers to put her alongside fellow former Sopranos star James Gandolfini. The Flintstones is set to begin production later this year in preparation for a 2013 premiere. Will the town of Bedrock rock again, or will the revival effort crumble?
