Seth To Make More Episodes Of Animated Series
Fans of animated comedy shows will have reason to cheer this week, as Seth McFarlane’s stable of Fox shows has been confirmed to continue for at least a further year.
Fox announced that they have officially renewed the best-known of McFarlane’s shows, Family Guy, into what will be its tenth season since premiering in 1999, while the 2009 spin-off of that series, The Cleveland Show, will progress through to a fourth season. The shows, which are on different production schedules, are currently nearing the end of their respective ninth and second seasons.
This news comes following announcements that the third of the cartoon trio, American Dad!, was renewed for a seventh season (currently in series six). Family Guy and Cleveland Show are on different production schedules.
This move guarantees that all three shows will last through at least 2012 and 2013, although Family Guy is reported to be on an unwritten agreement to remain on air until at least 2015. This is an impressive feat which was looking unlikely when the series (which shot show creator and voice actor McFarlane to stardom) was in its infancy, as it was twice temporarily cancelled by Fox, in 2000 and 2002. This was obviously not the end of the series, as a wave of online petitioning by fans convinced network executives to give the show a second (and third) chance, with the gamble appearing to have paid off big-time, with the show ongoing ever since its 2002-05 hiatus.
Kevin Reilly, head of entertainment at Fox, was naturally pleased with the renewals, stating specifically on Family Guy and The Cleveland Show: “For nine seasons, our viewers have been cracked up, delighted, surprised and, at times, gloriously disturbed by the mind of Seth MacFarlane - and they keep coming back for more. The Griffins (Family Guy) and the Browns (Cleveland Show) have become cornerstones of our Sunday nights, and we can’t wait to find out what new adventures Seth, Mike [Henry] and Rich [Appel] cook up for them next season.”
