New Service HBO Go Streaming Launched
HBO has officially unveiled its new premium online tv service but only if your a subscriber of HBO or Cinemax. Thats quite likely though as there are 38 million of you. But the good news is that it comes at no extra cost.
Called HBO Go, the service has streams available of the channel’s hit tv shows and movies and is designed to offer added value that may keep subscribers with the service. The content will be available here before the content filters down to DVD rental services such as Netflix.
The service is an attempt to stem the flow of subscribers who are thinking of or actually leaving the high monthly subscription contracts. Critics are saying that this is the cable companies muscling in on the success of web based tv.
HBO GO lets users browse for movies, documentaries, original series, and watch or add to watch lists. The service also has additional exclusive bonus material, soundtrack and cast information.
Viewers can watch HBO content not just at home but anywhere there is a broadband connection. HBO Go also lets users create up to 3 simultaneous subaccounts who can watch the same content. So its almost like a subscription service for 3 different users in one.
On the face of it, it seems odd that if you use Netflix then why are HBO or Comcast bothering with internet tv streaming services? After all Netflix’s are much cheaper than cable. Cable subscribers can dump their subsciptions and move to Netflix paying a mere $10 a month to watch DVDs mailed to them or watch the movies that Netflix streams online.
So the killer sales pitch will be that viewers get to see the content before studios release the titles to companies such as Netflix and Redbox. At present, HBO Go is only available to subscribers via Comcast or Verizon’s Fios service. It is not yet known if subscribers from other services will get access to HBO Go.
