Samsung Stretch The Limits With Flexi-Screen Design
Samsung have confirmed that they are planning a commercial release in 2012 of a smartphone featuring their latest technological development - flexible screens.
The Seoul (South Korea)-based company has been developing a ’flexible display’ over the past year, having unveiled their ‘foldable AMOLED’ technology earlier this year, and they now seem to be preparing an attempt to release the new device as a unique product on the market. They are wary that there is some competition for that status, though, as fellow manufacturers Nokia and Sony are said to have similar products in development, though it is believed that the Samsung version will be finished first.
Samsung first hinted at the mass production of AMOLED technology in June, with claims that the panels would start being produced ‘next year’.
While it is unknown if the product released will just be an updated version of their prototype (pictured), the fact that the technology is said to be ‘resistant to creasing’ after at least 100,000 bends is a key selling point that will probably remain, which might imply that the products could be handle common accidents (such as being dropped onto the floor) better than its rivals.
Samsung’s Robert Yi said of the developments of AMOLED: “The flexible display we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part. The application will probably start from the handset side.”
The company went on to reveal that they have big plans for the new format, with flexible-screen tablet computers and selected other mobile devices thought to be joining smartphones in the planning stages. Will flexi-phones become the future of mobile phone technology, or is it just a one-off gimmick? Whatever Samsung have planned, they will want to try and avoid being beaten in the market by Nokia, who recently demonstrated their version of a flexible smartphone with motion-sensor controls:
