Samsung To Stick With 3D Glasses TV For Now

In the 3dtv without glasses debate, Samsung have taken the side that 3DTV is best viewed with those darned 3D glasses, and the technology needed won’t be around for another 10 to 15 years that will make watching 3DTV without glasses convenient or comfortable.

The need to wear glasess has been a cause for concern for many 3D consumers. They make you look odd, are easy to lose/break and not helped by the fact that glases won’t work on other manufacturers 3DTV sets.

This incompatibility is something that may be removed in the future, but at this moment seems to be holding a lot of viewers back from taking the 3D plunge.

The Samsung Electronics Visual Display President has reaffirmed their position “The first challenge is the inconvenience of wearing glasses… I believe that this will be possible on cell phones and other mobile devices, or monitors that require smaller displays…but supplying 3D TV without glasses will not be possible in the next five to ten years.”

Samsung may not be covering their backs here, as they are currently committed to stereoscopic 3D technology, because autostereoscopic would be a very awkward viewing experience with todays technology.

Samsung hold the position of being able to dictate the 3D hardware market to some extent, as they currently have the largest market share of 3D enabled LCD TVs.

Unless LG or some of the other major players can challenge them on this 3D glasses issue and raise the bar where this technology is concerned. Toshiba seem to have confirmed Samsung’s fears after launching a glasses free 3d television. Sony have also been developing a glasses 3d television, but it is understood no company can make a screen large enough for the consumer demands.

Yoon may have mentioned Samsung’s commitment not only to their product range and any subsequent turnover, but also to the best viewer experience currently available.

  1. Interesting article I have read that the Toshibas autostereoscopic model is not up to the standard of stereoscopic, that aside standardising the active glasses would be a major step forward in reducing the cost of owning a 3D TV I think this will have to happen soon.

  2. Just read about the posibility of prescription 3DTV – that would help 3d viewing considerably for many of us. “Glasses Free” 3D just isn’t working out in larger televisions and the 3D effect is lost.

Just add on a few extra pairs of free glasses when purchasing a 3dtv – and it’ll help to keep us happy.

  3. Is there any way to make my Samsung 3D glasses to work with my Sony TV?
