Samsung Connected TV Apps Hit Million Downloads
Electronics giant Samsung have reached an important milestone with their connected tv product range, as one million ’apps’ have been sold on its Internet TV marketplace.
According to the South Korean company, 1 million applications have now been downloaded from their ‘Samsung Apps’ since its March launch. Hulu Plus, ESPN ‘Next Level’, CinemaNow, and Texas Holdem are said to be amongst the most popular of the 200+ applications featured on the online store.
Samsung is currently offering these smartphone-style ‘apps’ online via any of its TV’s with Internet capability, which is over half their 2010 range of HDTV’s. They have predicted total sales of this type of TV to reach 6.5 million HDTV units (featuring applications) by the end of 2010, with sales figures in 2012 hitting 20 million.
Many other major television makers have recently been looking to cash in on Samsung’s success, with Vizio currently being seen as the ‘best of the rest’ in this specfic market. Overall, though, research from iSuppli found that Vizio lead the LCD TV market based on overall shipments in the third quarter of 2010, with a 19.9% share. Samsung were close behind, with 17.7%. In all shipments to the US, though it was Samsung edging ahead, thanks to an increase in plasma sales, beating Vizio 19.3%-17%.
With Samsung on a clear success path with this new format of TV, how long will it be before other major players in the electronics market follow suit?
