Samsung Bring On Blockbuster Streams
Samsung are said to be close to confirming a service carriage deal with movie rental giant Blockbuster, who are looking to expand on their fledgling online film streaming service.
The arrangement will see the ‘Blockbuster On-Demand’ service added to Samsung’s connected devices by the end of Q2 (US & UK), before an expansion to Australia in Q3 or Q4. It is believed that the deal will cover a wide range of Samsung’s viewing-based products, including smart TV, tablet computers and smartphones (Galaxy brand), connected Blu-ray players, and laptops.
While his country may have to wait for a while before they can get their hands on the service, Paul Uniacke CEO of Franchise Entertainment Group (owners of Blockbuster Australia) was delighted at the news, saying of the potential of the arrangement: “The Samsung deal is a brilliant deal. The real estate of the future along with revenues belongs inside the screens that Samsung is delivering which is why the deal with Samsung is a great deal for us”.
As a means of accommodating their reported new service, the South Korean technology giant are said to be developing a connected ’global billing platform’ that could permit users of their products to create a user account that could pay for selected content as it is purchased. While details on it are uncertain this would most likely be a handy tool for Blockbuster On-Demand, who offer rentals (24 hours) and purchases of online-based films from $1.99.
While Blockbuster are definitely better-known for their work in the physical movie rental business, this ‘wide-ranging distribution’ arrangement could help them gain crucial market recognition with their online streaming service, as they look to challenge Netflix and other rivals, in particular in their home American market. Will a high-profile exposure through Samsung aid their cause?
