Samsung Blu ray players getting the Netflix makeover
In a deal between Samsung Electronics and Netflix, Samsung will equip their Blu ray High definition DVD players with the ability to download and stream movies and TV episodes from the Netflix Online streaming service, expanding on Netflix’s delivery service from standard mail delivery.
This could expand into Netflix embedding its software into Samsung TV sets allowing instant streaming with no additional hardware.
A joint statement from Netflix and Samsung revealed that they plan to embed this streaming ability into a selection of home entertainment devices.
The deal comes after a similar move with LG Electronics earlier this month allowing its players to include TV streaming on its range of Bluray players
Blu ray DVD players are specialised in playing high definition DVD movies.
Netflix already has a massive 8 million plus subscribers to its services mainly DVD mailed rentals that arrive in the post a day or so after ordering. However with the instant gratification of online services they are heavily pushing its ‘Watch Instantly’ service.
As well as its DVD partnerships, Netflix via Roku Inc has also been selling a $100 settop box that allows streaming of Netflix’s service straight to TV sets and is looking to enable Microsofts Xbox 360 compatible soon.
The Samsung two Blu ray models enabling Netflix’s service are the BD-P2500 and BD-P2550. Earlier customers of these models are entitled to a free software upgrade to make the players compatible with Netflix’s streaming movie service.
The selection of tv shows and movies available from a library of more than 12,000 titles will cost a minimum of $8.99 per month which will also include the mailed DVD rental service.
Netflix is looking to become a standard in all Bluray DVD and TV sets. Blu ray players are expected to become more popular as prices tumble.
