Russian State TV clamping down on illegal content.
After the recent issue of Youtube being sued by media giant Viacom for allegedly infringing copyright, now Russian TV network is suing Vkontakte a social networking website and Mail.ru for unauthorized use of its TV content
VGTRK, a Russian state run TV company founded in 1990 that has control
over channels Rossiya, Vesti, Kultura and Sportwhich is suing the two major local Internet portals. The email service Mail.ru and social networking site Vkontakte have been accused of letting their users upload, view and distribute unauthorized TV content.
Vesti chief editor Dmitry Melniko claimed – “We will sue all Internet resources that illegally distribute our content”
The Websites concerned have dismissed the accusations, saying that they had no control of their users that upload videos to their websites.
Clearly as internet tv gains in popularity the networks are getting ever more twitchy over use of their content.
