Roku XD Streaming Set-Top Box Goes Mainstream
Fans of the popular Roku XD, the HD streaming set-top box are now able to buy the box from Best Buy stores across the Country. Previously Roku had online been available to buy online and marks their first entry into real stores.
Roku is a simple box that pulls in streaming content to viewers tv sets. From online streaming services Netflix, Hulu and Amazon to Youtube and other services including music from Pandora, Youtube videos, Facebook and Flickr.
The $79.99 XD is the middle in the range of hardware from Roku, along with the lower spec Roku HD and the higher cost Roku XDS. The XD supports 1080p HD streaming and has HDMI connections. As well as Best Buy, the box will be on sale from RadioShack, Fry’s Electronics and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
Speaking for Roku, CEO Anthony Wood, said:- “Customers can now grab a Roku off the shelf at Best Buy, take it home, and be up and running, enjoying their favorite TV show, movie, music, or sports team in just a matter of minutes,”
Roku sits in a hotbed market along with big players such as Apple TV which many pundits claim is inferior, but have not had a distribution deal to put itself in front of browsing customers. They are experiencing rapid growth and doubling sales each year. Maybe now Apple will get some real competition.
