Roku Experience Sales Boost Thanks To Strong Competition

Roku prospering with the big fish

The internet TV market is becoming dominated by the big companies right now, so life is going to be tough for any small fry, right? Well actually Wrong, especially if you happen to be Roku. The company have been selling it’s set-top box since 2008, originally just as a way to bring Netflix to the tv screen.

However, the new strong competition from similar devices Apple TV and Google TV have actually seen Roku sales take a boost. They are at current growth levels doubling in size yearly. Many would have expected Roku sales to take a dive when the big boys came calling, but instead they have been increasing, especially since the launch of the new Apple TV box.

It seems that inadvertantly, Apple’s launch stoked up interest and attention to the market. Google TV is not proving itself to be a worthy competitor yet. Reported in Business Insider CEO of Roku Anthony Wood has said they will probably sell the millionth unit before the end of this year, with a revenues over $50 million. Next years predictions don’t look too bad either, with sales expected to hit $100 million.

The Roku box gives viewers access to content from companies such as Netflix and Amazon on Demand, which strangely enough is the place where Roku sells a lot of units. On Amazon best selling list the Roku XD player is number 9 retailing for $80. This puts it ahead of main rival Apple TV, Boxee and Google TV.

So do i still have time to put a Roku on my Christmas list?
