Roku 2 Adds More Content And Doubles As Gaming Device
Roku has released the new Roku 2, and has successfully found a way to include all of the features that made the previous Roku player a hit into a sleeker, smaller device.
The new Roku 2 still comes in three flavours, starting at the same competitive $60 for the Roku 2 HD, $80 for the Roku 2 XD, and $100 for the Roku 2 XS, which replaces the Roku XDS.
When the last player was released around a year ago, the Roku’s biggest competitor then was Apple TV, but Roku was able to keep out of Apple’s shadow by offering a selection of ports that include HDMI, component inputs and optional 1080p resolution.
But the thing that impressed the tech guys the most was its bigger selection of content compared to Apple TV. The Roku 2 now has 300 channels, althought some require subscription. The device also has Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, and other popular streaming channels.
The Roku 2 also offers advanced features and the same resolutions as before but now the new Roku is a gaming device as well with the inclusion of Angry Birds. If the new gaming enabled remote feels reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii controller, you’re not the only one.
While the gaming option is a nice bonus, dont let your expectations get the better of you as the Roku 2 is not rival the Xbox 360 or PlayStation PS3. More games expected in Roku’s selection soon.
The Roku 2 is a stronger contender as a streaming device. Its content line up and its attractive design gives users another reason to cut the cord when it comes to cable.
