Ricky Gervais Taken Back By Golden Globes
For the third year in a row, controversial comedian Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globe awards in 2012, despite what was described by critics as a ‘highly offensive’ performance from him at the event earlier this year. The ceremony is planned to take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles (USA) on 15 January, and recaps the highlights of TV and movies made in 2011.

The English comedian is known best for his roles in shows such as The Office, The Ricky Gervais Show, and An Idiot Abroad, as well as various stand-up shows and film work, sitting alongside his hosting duties of the prestigious film and television award ceremony in 2010 and 2011.
The Golden Globes’ official Twitter page revealed the news, stating: “Ricky Gervais will host the 69th Golden Globe Awards on January 15, 2012.”
Gervais himself took to Twitter over the news, noting the recent appointment of Billy Crystal to host the Oscars in 2012: “Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true).”
The president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA, the body that organise the awards) had said that Gervais’ 2011 hosting performance ’definitely crossed the line’ with what many saw to be offensive jokes towards a number of actors and celebrities. It seems that despite the A-lister furore, he has been given the job for the next ceremony (which is broadcast by NBC annually). Will he be asked to tone down on his material this time around?
