Redbox Become King Of DVD Rentals

How must it feel to finally reach number one just as the medium is declining? Not sure, but Redbox are officially number one in the DVD rental Sector. The good news is soured a little because profits are lower than expected from the rental kiosks.

DVD rental king

In the past Redbox has always had to play second fiddle to Netflix or Blockbuster. Now that one has gone bust and the other is concentrating on digital rentals, the Redbox kiosks have finally hit the big time.

The news comes from NPD Group, a market research comapany. They say that Redbox got 35% of DVD rentals during January with Netflix coming in at 30%. DVD stores accounted for 30% of rentals.

Russ Crupnick of NPD said:- “Redbox has done an outstanding job of meeting consumer needs for a ‘blended’ shopping experience. It saves an extra trip when I’m at Walmart or McDonalds, and the research shows that they are perceived as delivering a high value experience price wise.”

So number one, but at the wrong time. Might explain why Redbox are now looking at launching a streaming tv service.
