Record TV shows on TiVo with your Phone remotely
TiVo, king of the program recordershas announced a mobile website that lets users remotely schedule programs from selected mobile cell phones.
The mobile service known as TiVo Mobile, moves TiVo closer to a collision with Sling Media, and ultimately with cable operators all of whom are targeting mobile phone access to TV shows.
VP of product marketing at TiVo, Jim Denney, says: “Whether you are standing in line at the bank or talking about a new show with friends at dinner, you can now find and record shows whenever, wherever; a perfect tool for everyone.”
The new Mobile website, m.tivo.com has been optimised for the mobile smaller screen and whilst non TiVo users can browse the website and find TV shows. This new move by TiVo extends their presence beyond the home living room into the mobile arena, and TiVo is working on an app for BlackBerry as well.
The Website launched Tuesday also lets users search schedules by actor, director, title, and keyword. It also offers TV show recommendations based on choices made by previous visitors.
Controlling the main home TV via mobile device is not new. Sling Media has already been down that road with its Slingbox and related mobile applications. A number of cable operators and the two major phone companies are also developing mobile TV remote control apps.
“It may not be live TV content like Slingbox, but this pushes TiVo further down that path,” said Sameer Mithal, senior principal at IBB Consulting.
Alviso, California-based TiVo has at least one program that involves the transfer of TV content to mobile devices.
TiVo’s Desktop Plus allows users to transfer recorded TV shows to their PCs or a number of portable and mobile devices such as the Sony PSP and the Apple iPod, along with compatible mobile phones.
TiVo has more internet TV plans coming. In December it plans to make movies and TV episode streams available to customers courtesy of Netflix.
