Quarter Of All Homes Have a TV Connected To The Internet
A new report claims that almost a quarter (24%) of US homes have a television that has an internet connection. This is not an invasion of internet connected television sets though, but people have a variety of devices hooked up to the tv that have internet connection abilities.
The report from the Leichtman Research Group (LRG) looked at ways consumers connect to the Internet, and found that there are many devices that include Blu-ray players, games consoles and even the increasingly popular internet connected tv’s. Although the internet connectivity of these devices has been around for a while, it is only now that users are starting to make use of this feature and watching video from the web. In fact streaming movies direct to blu-ray is becoming very popular.
The stats show that only 1% of adults watch online video using one of these devices daily, and around 5% weekly. Watching video and tv this way is most popular with young males, with 16% of males in the 18-34 age range viewing streams from the web using one of these connected devices every week, compared to 3% weekly use from everyone else.
“Despite speculation that consumers are ‘cutting the cord’ to cable, satellite or Telco video services and choosing to watch video exclusively online or through other alternatives, there remains little evidence of this being a trend,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group.
“Emerging video services do not necessarily create either or scenarios in decisions to subscribe to a video service or not. Rather, they create opportunities and trade-offs in how, when, what, and where to consume the increasing video entertainment options.”
Among households with a TV connected to the Internet, 20% are using a video games console, 8% have an Internet connected television, and 6% use a Blu-Ray player that has internet connection abilities. When it comes to paying for online content, just 5% of users would be willing to pay $9.95 every month for online streaming from sites such as Hulu, whilst 81% are very anti subscription payments.
The report also found that:-
55% of Netflix subscribers report that they used the “Watch Instantly” feature in the past month — overall, 1% of all adults use Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” daily, and 4% weekly
Amongst participants, 3% of adults view a full length TV show online every day and 11% watch a show weekly
Amongst everyone that was surveyed, 4% strongly agree that they would consider disconnecting their TV service to just watch video online, this compares to 3% for the same period last year.
The take up of internet amongst ‘non techy’ people will obviously take a while to filter through, however with all the internet content being pushed at us from all angles. It wont be long before using the internet with your tv is a normal occurence.
