PlayStation Store To Re-Open For Business

After coming back online to the world in a limited capacity, Sony looks set to prepare for a near-full return to action in North America and Europe with the re-opening of their in-house download shop the PlayStation Store, starting next Tuesday.

Reports are suggesting that Gamasutra got hold of a memo sent out by Sony to its development partners. The letter suggested that the PlayStation Store, the online service where users can download free and premium games, demos, content, videos, movies, and applications, will be returning on May 24 provided there are no ‘unforeseen difficulties’.

The entire PlayStation Network had been down for over a month recently when hackers threatened to take personal information from the PSN’s 100 million+ userbase, but with the problem resolved by Sony, they are hoping that their free service can gradually get back to business following a partial revamp earlier in the week.  All did not run fully smoothly, though, as part of a mandatory security update required all users to change their passwords, and the resulting avalanche of simultaneous changes briefly flooded the servers.

It is currently unknown as to how far the PlayStation Store update will stretch, but early reports have confirmed that Europe and North American-based users will be able to access the store as of Tuesday, and be provided with the previously-promised ‘welcome back package’ including amongst other gifts, 2 free game downloads (from a selected group). Content for the store that was meant to go online at the time of the hack (late April) is to be the first content released upon the update of May 24, while subsequent planned releases will go online at regular intervals until  launches of content every few days until June 3, Gamasutra reported.

Sony PSN content manager Jack Osorno is reported to have said in the letter: “If there are concerns, we are willing to consider adjusting the release date of your content on this schedule. Adjustments will be made on a case by case basis.”

Although unconfirmed by Sony right now, this seems to be a likely return to near full-strength for the PlayStation Network. Will they now be able to put the past behind them?

  1. Bit of a bad article. Incorrect use of grammar and incorrect use of facts. Use apostrophes when appropriate and it hadn’t been down for over a month, just under to be correct, it was about 3 weeks. Bad use of English also noted, “All did not run fully smoothly” what type of description is that . . . ?? I’m no writer or anything myself, but you’re meant to be a proper editor, and I found it very unprofessional. Please improve
