Peter Chernin, considered to be one of the most powerful media executives in the world, and founder of the Chernin Group–an investment firm– is eyeing a new market. To put it simply Chernin and his subsidiary investment company CA Media want to build their own comics empire in the country of India–one that would rival the power of Marvel Comics.
Graphic India, which was launched in 2012 as a part of Liquid Comics, is an American comic book company that is now owned by CA Media and Liquid. Liquid will contribute a substantial amount of content to Graphic India–mainly a large supply of Indian characters that the audience in the region will be able to relate to.
“Following our successful entry into the traditional media space, we are very pleased that Graphic India marks our first investment in the digital space,” said Rajesh Kamat, CEO of CA Media India. Graphic India aims to target the youth of India, while providing content through traditional print, online distribution and streaming animated shorts. “We look forward to working with the company to create heroes that inspire the next generation of Indian consumers.”
Several new projects are in the works and will be launching throughout 2013. Chernin and his slew of investment and management companies have even partnered with former Marvel master Stan Lee and POW! Entertainment. The two will be working to help create Lee’s first superhero specifically for the Indian market. Lee will collaborate with both artists and creators to develop animated clips and comics.
