In the emerging world of internet and traditional TV, another major manufacturer has launched an internet enabled TV market.

The European IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) Television set to be launched in May by Panasonic is its first venture into the battle for a piece of the internet and TV entertainment pie.

Featuring software known as ‘Viera Cast’ which will be available in a selection of Panasonic Televisions and Bluray players. It will be a free internet connection service using broadband to deliver a selection of websites across the television screen content.

The announcement made in Amsterdam this also confirmed that YouTube, Google’s Picasa, Eurosport and Bloomberg had also signed up to the internet tv service.

The TV will not have a browser, but enable the internet content to be accessed by remote control using a dedicated button letting viewers switch seamlessly between the sites and the TV show.

Other manufacturers have announced similar plans including Samsung, Philips and Sony all looking to deliver the web to the television as a user friendly interactive experience.

Seemingly similar to Yahoo’s internet tv widget which will allow hardware to show widgets from internet sites like Flickr, YouTube, Yahoo News, USA Today, eBay auctions and more.

However nobody knows if these kind of TV’s will take off with viewers being reluctant with the perceived difficulty of bringing the PC into their living room areas.

Meko analyst Bob Raikes, says that PC based home entertainment is too complicated for mass market adoption, which has left the way open for TV manufacturers to fill the gap.

“With internet TV there is no quality of service and it’s not secure or reliable, whereas people trust their televisions.”

He also commented that the younger social networking generation would continue to use their laptops and netbooks, surfing the web with the TV in the background.

This range of Panasonic TV’s will also feature DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) connectivity, a standard that lets multiple devices share disparate digital content across a home network.

The networked house will however eventually happen, and the television will become part of a wired and wireless infrastructure that can be shared seamlessly throughout the house.

How long it takes to achieve this internet and TV hybrid Utopea is anyones guess, but the speed of change is this area is pretty astounding. And of course, you will find all new development news right here.
