New Online Chat Series Leaked To Assange

Julian Assange, who made headlines last year as more high-profile stories were unveiled by him (the editor-in-chief) for Wikileaks (a site hosting stories released by whistleblowers of illegal activity within public or private organisations), is set for an alternative online presence which might not be under as much scrutiny, as he reveals that he is scheduled to present a new online chat show.

Australian-born journalist Assange, who is currently on bail in English courts (for a personal extradition case to Sweden on a criminal matter unrelated to his work or website), has been permitted to host the show, which will run for 10 weekly episodes (of half-hour length) beginning in March.

Wikileaks announced the move, which will see Assange joined by politicians, revolutionaries, and subject experts to help discuss ‘the world tomorrow’.

Assange said of his new show, which is currently un-named: “Through this series I will explore the possibilities for our future in conversations with those who are shaping it. Are we heading towards utopia, or dystopia and how we can set our paths?”

Wikileaks claim to have sourced the series to a number of outlets on cable, satellite, and online networks to an estimated 600 million potential global viewer base, though no information has been released as to who the hosts will be. The site’s official press release regarding the series read: “Upheavals and revolutions in the Middle East have commenced an era of political change that is still unfolding. In the West, the deterioration of the rule of law has demonstrated the bankruptcy of once leading political institutions and ideologies. The internet has never been so strong, or so much under attack. At this pivotal moment there is an awareness of the need to radically rethink the world around us.”

While recent developments in the SOPA case might not make the ‘internet situation’ at least seem as bad as Wikileaks are making it out to be, could a new discussion series really help shape the future of a more free-thinking political planet as it aims to, or is the show just over-hyping itself before it goes to air?
