Newspapers Are Old News, The Internet Is Taking Over

New research shows that one of our top sources for the latest news is via the Internet, and it comes above traditional newspapers. The internet comes in as third most popular source for daily news, just behind local and national tv news broadcasts.

Newsapapers moving over for the Internet

A survey for the Pew Research Centre found in a poll that online news is also more popular than the radio, showing how much things have changed. Around one third of mobile phone users also tap into the net for the latest news.

The survey which was conducted on US citizens but probably rings true for most of the Western world found that 92% of citizens get the news from a range of platforms with 61% using the internet. Local and national TV news, including both cable and network, came out as the most popular with 78% of participants.

Showing how far the print industry has fallen, a mere 17% said they read news in a national newspaper. Many questoned said they only visit around five websites regularly, especially sociall networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. When a big news story breaks everyone wants to discuss it with their friends, and Facebook is the place evryone seems to hang out nowadays.

The study, which focused on trying to understand “the new news landscape” in the United States, comes at a time when many newspapers and TV stations around the country are struggling, as more Americans turn to other avenues to get their information.

The survey said: “The process Americans use to get news is based on foraging and opportunism. They seem to access news when the spirit moves them or they have a chance to check up on headlines.”

The internet has enjoyed a huge increase in popularity in recent years, especially with the introduction of mobile phone technology meaning that phone users can now have access to the latest news wherever they are and at any time of day. The widespread use of Wifi means that news via the tv is available as well.

The report said: “In this new multi-platform media environment, people’s relationship to news is becoming portable, personalized, and participatory.”
