Network TV Is Available To Catch Up Online, So Long As Your Quick
Many online tv viewers are under the impression that they can take their time watching shows online, after all a catch up tv service means just that. Catch up when your ready. However, a study by tv aggregator Clicker has shown that 90% of tv shows from the networks get posted on the web, but get removed within a few weeks.
The study showing how much network TV is online looked at all TV shows that made their way onto the internet during the past Fall or Spring seasons on TV networks ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and CW. They found a very high number of shows broadcast, found their way onto internet tv sites.
So far so good, but shows getting onto the net varied, from within a day of their original air date, up to two weeks of the air date. Once up, Clicker looked at the time they were taken down. Out of the 4,420 broadcast episodes Clicker tracked, around 60% of those episodes were gone after three weeks of being online, and 90 percent were gone after six weeks.
Of the networks that Clicker tracked, ABC and CBS posted the most shows online, but The CW had the highest percentage of its shows online, with 100% being available to U.S. Internet users.
The networks including ABC, CBS and NBC kept certain shows off the internet for reasons unknown. Other facts from the study include:-
- 90% of shows became available online
- 50% of episodes came online within a day of their original air date
- 60% of episodes went offline within three weeks of their original air date
- Free broadcast content is only available online for a limited time.
So, if you want to catch up online then get in quick. We are not sure how long tv shows will be freely available. With the rise of subscription services such as Netflix and Hulu plus, could the days of free tv online be coming to an end?
