Netflix Head South To Begin Global Expansion
High-profile American Internet movie streaming company Netflix have a dominating presence in the online community of North America, and it was probably only a matter of time before they announced their decision to expand their services to other regions.
They announced earlier this week that they will be making an expansion, with over 40 countries and territories from across Latin America and the Caribbean due to be able to recieve subscription-based access to the site at some time later this year.
The company will be looking to add to its total of over 23.6m subscribers in USA and Canada by tapping into the potential market of large populations in the remainder of North America and whole of South America.
This potential wave of new users are to be encouraged with an increased level of content in either dubbed or native Spanish and Portugese languages. It will be another step forward for online streaming in the region, as the currently ongoing South American football tournament (2011 Copa America) is being shown live on YouTube.
Users in the Netflix expansion countries will be able to access unlimited shows and movies instantly streamed to their computer, TV, or mobile device in exchange for a monthly fee. One service that will not carry over from the USA and Canada, though, is post-order DVD rental.
Netflix’s communications Vice-President Steve Swasey, though, was undeterred, stating: ”We’ll have more details later in the year. We’re really excited about providing services that Americans and Canadians love, which is streaming from Netflix over the Internet.”
Greg Larson, the town manager of Los Gatos (USA) (the town where Netflix was founded and is currently based), was unsurprised to see this move happen, and expressed his pleasure at the success: “It is great to see our leading corporate citizen continue to break new ground and perform so well. It’s not surprising given their prior expansion in the U.S. and Canada, as well as the huge markets beyond North America that can be well-served by the exceptional technologies being developed right here at home. This is no different than what you’ve seen previously with eBay, Google and Facebook expanding world-wide.”
With Netflix also ready planning a move to a different part of town in Los Gatos, locals will be pleased at the retention of over $3m a year in sales tax income to the town’s funds, rather than the company deciding to move somewhere more high-profile to reflect their global expansion process. Will Netflix manage to keep a balance between local and international duties?
